Additionally, the Flint and Roosevelt Park campuses are also joining forces to collect items.

“Having visited this camp several times as a guest, I got to see firsthand how special this week at camp is to these young people,” said Deb Weiss, Saginaw Campus Director. “Campers get to spend a week without barriers with their friends. Once camp is over, the kids immediately start looking forward to next year’s camp. It is a very moving and meaningful experience to see firsthand, and we are very pleased to be able to contribute to such a worthy cause.”

Ross Medical Education Center is asking local residents to help support MDA’s summer camp program by donating items at the following campuses:

Saginaw Campus
4300 Fashion Square Blvd.
Suite 202
Saginaw, MI 48603

Ross will accept donations all of April during the week from Monday – Friday, 8am to 4pm

For more details or information on wish list items contact Deb Weiss at (989) 791-5192 or by email: dweiss@rosseducation.edu.

This is the second year that Ross in Saginaw partnered with MDA to support their summer camp program. Last year the Saginaw campus collected more than 200 items!

Ross Medical Education Center celebrated the opening of its new Grand Rapids-area location on Monday, November 26, with an array of informative and fun, health-oriented activities open to the community, Ross students and staff, and their family members. The new Ross campus is located at 4528 Breton S.E., across from Horrocks Market.

Events Spotlight Diabetes Awareness and Prevention

The grand opening celebration started at 12:30 p.m. with speaker Dr. Jean Norris, educator and author of “No Sugar Added – Straight Talk From Those Living with Diabetes.” Norris shared her personal insights into living with diabetes for the past 25 years, her positive philosophy and her commitment to supporting diabetes awareness programs and research.
After a 1 p.m. ribbon cutting ceremony, with members of the Kentwood Chamber of Commerce, Ross students and guests participated in a diabetes awareness balloon launch, followed by a onemile “Walk It Off” diabetes awareness walk ending at the campus.
“Ross has been a part of the Grand Rapids area for more than 20 years,” said Campus Director Ryan Middleton. “As we open our new campus doors to the public, we’re thrilled to share our commitment to health education and awareness, including Dr. Norris’s personal story of inspiration, with our students, staff and our neighbors.”

Programs Open Now

Enrollment is currently open for Ross’ Medical Assistant, Dental Assistant, Pharmacy Technician and Medical Insurance Billing and Office Administration programs, with ongoing admissions and multiple course start dates in December and January.
The Grand Rapids-area campus is one of 14 Michigan locations for the allied health school, which has 24 campus locations in 5 states. Programs vary by location, and also include Veterinary Assistant.

Erik started in February of 2010 working in Career Services at Madison Heights. “My main focus was to help students with externships and job placement, which meant identifying new partner facilities for students and servicing our existing partners,” said VanDyck.

In September of 2010, Erik was promoted to Assistant Campus Director at Madison Heights, and worked there until June 2012, when he was asked to serve as acting Campus Director for the Ann Arbor campus during a maternity leave. Now, as of October 2012, Erik is back in Career Services, at the Taylor, Michigan campus.

When asked about his many moves, what Erik mentions first is how much he’s gained by getting to know different areas of the Ross business. “By working in several positions and at several locations I’ve had the opportunity to meet a lot of great people and see the bigger picture of Ross Education – from central administration to campus-level,” said VanDyck. “The difficult thing about moving so much is that each time it’s hard to leave the campuses and all the great friends I’ve made.”

Originally referred to Ross by a friend, he thought that working in education would be rewarding. “Lots of my family members work in education, and it’s nice to be able to have a job and career that serves a greater purpose,” he said. “In addition to that, it feels great to be working for the students to help make their lives and careers better.”

Asked what he loves about being back in Career Services, Erik said, “More so than any other job, you get to meet hundreds of students that you hope to have a positive impact on, and to help them through their challenges. In many ways, we’re not just working for Ross. We’re working for the students.”

Having seen many aspects of the Ross business, Erik recognizes the importance of being positive and sharing that attitude with the students. “Many of our students don’t have a lot of cheerleaders in their lives until they come to Ross. Here, we’re able to encourage and help them build their futures.”

Speaking about his new ‘home’ at the Taylor campus, Erik said, “I’m still new to the location, but I’ve already met some great people.”

As he settles into his new role, Erik will share insights and best practices from along the way. “Each campus has a very distinctive feel. It’s nice that I’ve been able to work in some different settings and take some of the positives I’ve learned from each to bring with me. And because I’ve gotten to know so many great people, it’s fun when you cross paths with someone you’ve met along the way.”

Erik lives in the suburban Detroit area with his wife, Lindsey, baby daughter Brynlee, and dog Oscar.

Mia Vargo is known for developing strong partnerships with non-profit organizations in her community. Port Huron supports many local groups, such as the March of Dimes and Habitat for Humanity. This year, the campus rallied around the Hunter Hospitality House which provides temporary lodging for families with loved ones in the hospital. The House is located next to St. Joseph Mercy in Port Huron.

To support the House, Vargo led the campus in a food and personal needs, donated to its “100 for $100” campaign, and contributed the funds that had been earmarked for the annual holiday staff party. Both she and Faith Kirnberger, Career Development Coordinator, were recently interviewed on cable station CTV6 to discuss their partnership with the House. The interview can be seen online at www.watchctv.org. Vargo hopes that this new relationship will generate additional opportunities for externships and job placements in the medical community.

The spirit of the giving back is definitely reflected in the way she feels about working at Ross.

“I can’t tell you how much I really enjoy working for a company that encourages community involvement,” she said.

Vargo and her staff are just as passionate about providing excellent customer service to their students. When asked what motivates her about coming to work every day, she related the story of a Medical Assisting student who, with tears in her eyes, told her how thankful she was for the support the campus had given her when she was ready to give up on herself. The student also presented Vargo with a Christmas card and a hand-made gift from her daughter.

“How many people get to go to work each day knowing that they are helping someone else change their life?” said Vargo.
