The campus decided to donate the items to Trumbull County Head Start to help meet their needs for the new school year. Many Ross students were personally touched by the generosity of their classmates because they have children that are involved in the program and would benefit from the donations. The classes competed to see which one could bring in the most supplies. The winner of the competition received “Marvin.” Marvin is a gold shoe and the trophy of the Niles campus. Students always love to be able to claim Marvin for their class and this contest was no different! After a LOT of hard work, 1st place went to the evening Medical Assistant class, 2nd place to the Medical Insurance Billing and Office Administration class, and 3rd place to the Pharmacy Technician class. All classes worked hard to collect supplies and support the Head Start program. It meant a lot for the program too. “They brought a lot of supplies,” said Janet Diegan, Director of Head Start in Trumbull County, “we just so appreciate everything.”

This was the first time that the campus has worked with Trumbull County Head Start, but they were impressed by the organization and how much they do for the students that participate. Head Start began as part of an initiative by Lyndon B. Johnson in 1965. What began then as a small short-term support has now evolved into a year round organization with numerous services and programs offered. Head Start is a federally funded preschool program present in all 50 states and Puerto Rico that serves the young children of low-income families. Their mission is to prepare children aged five and under for kindergarten and the rest of their academic careers. (http://www.acf.hhs.gov/programs/ohs)

The program in Trumbull County is able to offer transportation, health screenings, and social and emotional support services. They also provide nutritious meals for children and support families in helping them learn basic daily hygiene necessities like teeth brushing. They coordinate with school districts and local mental health organizations to assist children with disabilities. In addition to all they do for the youth of the community, they also provide advocates for families and are diligent to help them in any way they are able. Janet Diegan, Head Start Director, shared her motivation for being involved: “It’s important as a part of this community to get these children prepared for school so that they can excel. We want them ready now so they can graduate and continue their education. It’s also so fulfilling to watch the families become more self-sufficient with our help.”

If you are interested in checking your family’s eligibility or applying for Head Start, visit their site to find a location near you.
