But don\u2019t for a moment think that makes the job of a medical biller and coder lack humor. In fact, they probably get just as many laughs as anyone, maybe more. Although looking through <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ama-assn.org\/ama\/pub\/physician-resources\/solutions-managing-your-practice\/coding-billing-insurance\/hipaahealth-insurance-portability-accountability-act\/transaction-code-set-standards\/icd10-code-set.page?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ICD-10 diagnoses, which recently replaced ICD-9<\/a>, may not sound laugh-worthy, to the trained eye, there is plenty to entertain!<\/p>\n<p>There are a variety of codes that are memorized by medical billers because they are so frequently used. However, some people seem to have a knack for getting injured in some very unique ways. Even though these codes aren\u2019t commonly used (we hope!), they still have to exist for when the situation arises.<\/p>\n<p>Enjoy 12 such codes that got us laughing and are sure to get a chuckle from a medical biller you know! We sincerely hope that none of these things happen to you &#8211; be careful out there!<\/p>\n<h4><strong>1. V97.33XD:<\/strong> Sucked into jet engine, subsequent encounter<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rosseducation.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/jet-engine1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/rosseducation.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/jet-engine1-300x176.jpg\" alt=\"jet engine\" width=\"300\" height=\"176\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-20781\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rosseducation.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/jet-engine1-300x176.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rosseducation.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/jet-engine1.jpg 499w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Not only did the patient get sucked into a jet engine and survive it (how?!), but then they only survived to get sucked into an engine for a SECOND time. We\u2019re really not sure how that happened, but maybe it\u2019s time to steer clear of jet engines?<\/p>\n<p><em>*So, we discovered that this actually means that this is their second encounter with a doctor for this event, but it\u2019s a little less dramatic than their second terrifying experience with a jet engine\u2019s insides.<\/em><\/p>\n<h4><strong>2. W55.42XA:<\/strong> Struck by pig, initial encounter<\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.smosh.com\/sites\/default\/files\/2015\/02\/reporter-attack-pig.gif\" width=\"350\" height=\"196\" class=\"alignleft\" \/>Apparently pigs aren\u2019t always cuddly and gentle. In fact, they may be surprisingly volatile, especially if you get in their way. So, to avoid being struck by a pig the initial time, much less any additional times, bring snacks and just try to stay out of their way.<\/p>\n<p><em>*Big Major Cay, an island in the Bahamas, has a group of swimming pigs that will come right out to boats. So, when on vacation in the islands, be careful in the water.<\/em><\/p>\n<h4><strong>3. V00.01XA:<\/strong> Pedestrian on foot injured in collision with roller-skater, initial encounter<\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/45.media.tumblr.com\/7c539bb3b16cddcd01afac5100ec35e4\/tumblr_nwoiaqcJ2e1suazs6o1_500.gif\" width=\"250\" height=\"140.5\" class=\"alignright\" \/><br \/>\nNow this is one that we could actually see happening. Picture it &#8211; you\u2019re on your phone, checking status updates, and you hear someone coming. You look up just too late and BAM!, you get nailed by a rogue roller skater who laughs and keeps going.<\/p>\n<p><em>*Do people still go roller skating?<\/em><\/p>\n<h4><strong>4. W22.01XA:<\/strong> Walked into wall, initial encounter<\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img.buzzfeed.com\/buzzfeed-static\/static\/2015-05\/13\/7\/enhanced\/webdr15\/anigif_enhanced-buzz-3367-1431516883-5.gif?no-auto\" width=\"300\" height=\"180\" class=\"alignleft\" \/>Okay, now this one has happened to all of us. Mornings can be tough, and doors can sometimes be hard to find. Just do us a favor and watch where you\u2019re going!<\/p>\n<p><em>*How many of these people were texting and walking? It\u2019s dangerous!<\/em><br \/>\n[clear]<\/p>\n<h4><strong>5. Y92.252:<\/strong> Hurt at the Opera<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rosseducation.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/opera-singer1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/rosseducation.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/opera-singer1-300x223.jpg\" alt=\"opera singer\" width=\"300\" height=\"223\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-20793\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rosseducation.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/opera-singer1-300x223.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rosseducation.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/opera-singer1.jpg 634w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nWe really want to know exactly how many people have had to use this code. Also, *how* were they hurt at the opera? Was it inner ear damage? Or did they trip and fall down the stairs?<\/p>\n<p><em>*Honestly, we think it was probably those monocles. They look dangerous.<\/em><br \/>\n[clear]<\/p>\n<h4>6. Y93.D1: Accident while knitting or crocheting<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rosseducation.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Pink_knitting_in_front_of_pink_sweatshirt.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/rosseducation.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Pink_knitting_in_front_of_pink_sweatshirt-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Pink knitting in front of pink sweatshirt\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-20813\" \/><\/a>Those giant needles seem dangerous! Or maybe it was just severe finger cramps? We also feel obligated to say that driving while knitting or crocheting is *never* a good idea and would likely lead to this code being used. It\u2019s just *knot* a good idea!<\/p>\n<p><em>*See what we did there?<\/em><br \/>\n[clear]<\/p>\n<h4>7. V91.07XA: Burn due to water skis on fire, initial encounter<\/h4>\n<p>We\u2019re not sure who the person was that required the creation of this code, but we would love to meet them. Check out this video of someone attempting this.<iframe width=\"560\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QrUlR-OVj6w\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><br \/>\n<em>*Do NOT try this at home&#8230; or anywhere else. Please.<\/em><\/p>\n<h4>8. V95.43: Spacecraft collision injuring occupant<\/h4>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/38.media.tumblr.com\/tumblr_loevqyFU1i1qzozj1.gif\" width=\"240\" height=\"179\" class=\"alignleft\" \/>Does this only apply to <em>human<\/em> occupants?<\/p>\n<p><em>*NASA astronauts need medical care too!<\/em><br \/>\n[clear]<\/p>\n<h4>9. Also, who is the person tasked with determining the appropriateness of using this code?<br \/>\n<em><br \/>\n*Be careful about using this in case the recipient knows what it means!<\/em><br \/>\n[clear]<\/p>\n<h4>10. W59.22XA: Struck by turtle<\/h4>\n<p>Turtles are used as the icon for slow-movers. How does this happen? Ever think about the fact that many arts and crafts tools wouldn\u2019t be allowed on a plane? Or about the fact that we are forever trying to teach our kids how to appropriately walk with scissors?<\/p>\n<p><em>*But really, do be careful walking with scissors.<\/em><br \/>\n[clear]<\/p>\n<h4>12. Z99.89: Dependence on enabling machines and devices, not elsewhere classified<\/h4>\n<p><div style=\"width: 640px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><!--[if lt IE 9]><script>document.createElement('video');<\/script><![endif]-->\n<video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-20768-1\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/webm\" src=\"http:\/\/i.imgur.com\/bDbF8uo.webm?_=1\" \/><a href=\"http:\/\/i.imgur.com\/bDbF8uo.webm\">http:\/\/i.imgur.com\/bDbF8uo.webm<\/a><\/video><\/div>We wanted to save this one for the end as it is most certainly applicable to nearly every single one of us. In fact, if you are reading this post, whether if it\u2019s on a smartphone, tablet, or computer, you are likely fairly dependent on your device. When was the last time you used your phone or other device? If it was more than an hour or two, give yourself a pat on the back &#8211; you are the minority!<\/p>\n<p><em>*Just be careful walking and texting, you don\u2019t want to have one of previously mentioned codes describe you! Think V00.01XA or W22.01XA.<\/em><br \/>\n[clear]<\/p>\n<p>We know that this is not all of the hilariously specific and odd incidents that could be logged by a medical biller or coder, but these are definitely some of our favorites!
