But her most recent visit stands out among the others. While at the campus, Caitlin gave a moving presentation to the Lansing campus\u2019 current enrollees, offering them an opportunity to join <a href=\"http:\/\/www.miblood.org\/be-the-match-registry\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Be The Match<\/a>. Ross students met Caitlin\u2019s earnest plea for new donors with an overwhelming response! A whopping 31 students \u2013 nearly half of the campus population \u2013 willingly joined the Be The Match Donor Registry that day, demonstrating their compassion for others and their commitment to saving lives.<\/p>\n<p>For those that are not familiar with leukemia or similar diseases, they might be surprised to learn that, according to the Be The Match website, \u201cevery three minutes someone is diagnosed with blood cancer. Also, 70% of patients needing a marrow transplant do not have a fully matched donor in their family.\u201d This results in \u201c14,000 patients per year whose only hope for a cure is a transplant from someone outside their family.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Ross-Medical-Education-Center-Be-the-Match-Michigan-Blood-1-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Ross Medical Education Center Be the Match Michigan Blood\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-42849\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rosseducation.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Ross-Medical-Education-Center-Be-the-Match-Michigan-Blood-1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rosseducation.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Ross-Medical-Education-Center-Be-the-Match-Michigan-Blood-1-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/rosseducation.edu\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Ross-Medical-Education-Center-Be-the-Match-Michigan-Blood-1.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>\u201cBe The Match is an amazing opportunity, and to know I could be the reason someone stays alive is a very humbling experience,\u201d shared Rebecka Jones, a student in <a href=\"\/programs\/medical-assistant\/\">Lansing\u2019s Medical Assistant program<\/a>. Her classmate, Amanda Pennington, added, \u201cI decided to become a potential donor because that could be my children one day that need this life-saving chance, and I want to be someone\u2019s life-saving chance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The process of joining Be The Match is easy. Once the paperwork is completed, all that is needed is a cheek swab. When a donor is called upon to donate bone marrow, the procedure involves outpatient surgery. However, most cases simply require a peripheral blood stem cell (PBSC) donation, and surgery is not required. Be The Match promises: \u201cWe\u2019re with you every step of the way with support and information.\u201d Another student at Ross\u2019 Lansing campus, Bibiana Munoz-Delgado, made a significant statement, \u201cIt doesn\u2019t hurt to try. It only hurts to not to try.
