This resale shop opened its doors in December 2013 and continues to operate primarily with the help of volunteers. The purpose of the resale shop is to provide a financial stream to maintain services for victims of domestic and sexual violence who are housed at The Shelterhouse of Midland.

With the help of generous donors, loyal customers and countless volunteer hours, the store has exceeded all expectations since conception, earning a profit each year. Unfortunately, at the same time, federal funding for the organization has been reduced. Community members who may not be able to make a financial donation can still donate gently used clothing and household items to support Shelterhouse’s mission.

The Shelterhouse is a non-profit organization committed to provide safety, shelter, advocacy and counseling to survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. Serving both Midland and Gladwin counties, their efforts remain focused on the goal to eliminate violence people face in today’s society. Over a two year period, The Shelterhouse of Midland has seen crises calls increase 52% and there has been a 41% increase in nights of shelter provided. A significant benefit for Shelterhouse residents is free access to the inventory of the store.

As the Ross student volunteers sorted through clothing, they gave each item one last look for flaws as they hung clothing according to size to be displayed on the resale shop floor. Each of the Ross volunteers agrees that volunteering their time at The Shelterhouse Resale Shop was a worthwhile opportunity to help out the community! The campus is already discussing their next chance to support this great community organization.

If you are interested in making a donation or volunteering at The Shelterhouse Resale Shop, visit their website at www.shelterhousemidland.org/resaleshop/.

This May, students from Ross Medical Education Center in Midland, Michigan volunteered their time at local The Shelterhouse Resale Shop.…
Read More

[2
