That’s exactly what the Ross Medical Education Center – Port Huron campus did by welcoming guest speaker and Advisory Board member, Dan Krumenaker, Registered Nurse and Practice Manager of Cardiology Associates of Port Huron.

Mr. Krumenaker spoke to the campus about the importance of heart health, stating that heart disease remains the #1 killer of both men and women in the United States. He encouraged everyone, no matter their age, to be aware of their blood pressure, heart rate, cholesterol levels and family history. “Some heart disease risk factors are genetic but,” Mr. Krumenaker continued, “there are some risk factors we can control, like our diet and exercise.” By knowing our family history, our levels, and the last time we had them checked, we can actually assist our doctors to better help us manage any heart disease related issues.

At the end of the presentation, Mr. Krumenaker offered to answer questions. Several Medical Assistant students asked questions including,

“Describe common heart attack symptoms.”
“What do you see as the pros and cons of stem cell research?”
“How does a pacemaker work?”

These questions and others lead into a great conversation about heart health and the benefits of knowing your personal risk factors and controlling what you can.

In addition to the guest speaker, students created cards for current heart patients to be distributed by Cardiology Associates of Port Huron. The cards are a way for students to help brighten a heart patient’s day and serves as a reminder to them the number of heart patients in the Port Huron area.

The American Heart Association is the nation’s oldest, largest voluntary organization devoted to fighting cardiovascular diseases and stroke.
