On August 26, 2010, the students and staff of Ross’s Brighton campus donated 650 pounds of food to the Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan. Students were rewarded for their efforts with a casual dress day. Dave Bell, Food Distribution Coordinator of the Livingston Distribution Center, received the donation. Steven Redmond, assistant campus director at Brighton, said, “When I told Dave I had a donation, he asked me to ‘just bring it in.’ He didn’t realize I’d brought a van packed full of food!”
The Livingston Distribution Center distributes 135,000 pounds of food each month to roughly 1,300 families, 500 of which are senior citizens. Ross’s donation will provide approximately 600 meals. “Most pantries hand out a pre-packed box of food each month,” Bell said. “What’s nice about our pantry is that it’s a Client Choice store, where people can shop for the items they need, including fresh fruits and vegetables.”
Based on the success of the food drive, Brighton looks forward to future partnerships with Gleaners. To find out how you can donate or volunteer at a Gleaner branch, visit Gleaners at gcfb.org or call 866-GLEANER (453-2637).
