This winter the Ross Medical Education Center campus in Cincinnati was able to partner with Hoxworth Blood Center, an organization affiliated with the University of Cincinnati, for a blood drive. The campus worked alongside Sharon Hardy, Hoxworth Blood Center Donor Recruitment and Community Relations Coordinator, for the event. They were excited to have 16 volunteers and be able to donate eight units of blood during the event.
Cincinnati has done blood drives in the past, and has loved the opportunity to partner with Hoxworth Blood Center for them. Hoxworth is very well known in the area and a pleasure to work with because of how helpful they are and how educational they are able to make each blood drive experience for the students. Robin Re, Ross Medical Education Center Campus Director, said of the event, “It is a great opportunity to get the students involved while helping others in need and to give back to the community. They felt that they had made a difference.” Once the students are registered, they have the opportunity to see where their blood goes within the tri-state area and that is very exciting to them.
Overall, the event was, and always is, a great success. The staff, faculty, and students at Ross were motivated and excited to donate. The campus provided juice and refreshments for each of the donors, and everyone took turns going out to the Hoxworth bus for donations. To give the donors a little peace of mind, the instructors and staff at Ross passed out materials provided by Hoxworth before the donations began. Hoxworth also provided an educational DVD which was shown in the classrooms for all students. The students that could participate did and were extremely happy to be part of donating blood to those in need in their community. The campus looks forward to their next opportunity to work with this awesome organization!
