Throughout the month of June, the staff, faculty, and students at the Ross Medical Education Center campus in Davison partnered with local Lambaria Eye and Optical to make a difference to many individuals around the world. Their mission was to collect used prescription eyeglasses during the month and then donate all the collected glasses to the area Lions Club. Everyone worked together to find and donate used glasses they and their family members had lying around unused.
All of their combined efforts contribute to the Lions Recycle for Sight program. This was an initiative started because Lions Club leaders realized that nearly every household has usable eyeglasses that have been replaced and sit around the house. Throughout the year, drives like this one provide glasses to regional Lions Eyeglass Recycling Centers. Once there, they are sorted, cleaned, and distributed to those in need. Many of the recipients of the donations are in developing countries and would otherwise not have access to vision care or correction.
By the end of the drive, about 25 pairs of eyeglasses had been donated by staff and students in addition to the donations made by Lambaria Eye and Optical. The campus community is excited that they were able to contribute to a cause that will potentially have an international impact. They hope that their donations will help make an impact on individuals and families in need. Michelle Lambaria-Robson, Assistant Campus Director of Education, was very pleased with the drive. She shared, “we at Ross realize that there are many people in need of prescription eyeglasses. Our contributions will benefit those in need of this modern necessity.” Career Service Representative Victoria Carpenter is looking forward to raising awareness in her community for this need. “We hope to make this an annual event and partner with other local businesses in the Davison community going forward,” she said.
