Module 2 of Ross Medical Education Center’s Dental Assistant program incorporates four courses for the Dental Assistant student. The first of the four courses taught is Dental Records Management. In this course, students become familiar with records management systems, billing, banking and insurance processing, as well as taking case histories and obtaining information for the completion of dental records. Students practice filing skills and learn to use the Dentrix dental software for creating and maintaining patient records. Students are exposed to office skills such as using a fax machine, scanning documents and attaching to an email among other administrative tasks. Students prepare a dental charts and perform a variety of office skills as proficiency for this course.
The next course in this module is Anatomy/Cranial Nerves. In this course, students are introduced to the cranial nerves and blood supply. Students study the cranial anatomy as it relates to anesthesia administration. They will become familiarized with the blood vessels, arteries, veins and capillaries. Various dental demonstration models found in the classroom, including one of the human skull, are often used to study the placement of these structures.
The third of the four courses Dental Instruments and Equipment. In this course, students learn how to handle and transfer dental instruments. They are familiarized with the basic preventative and restorative hand instruments as well as the rotary equipment, often referred to as the drill. Proficiencies for this course include maintenance of the dental handpiece and instrument identification. In addition, students will be required to demonstrate proficiency in the following areas: autoclave, ultrasonic cleaner, and x-ray processing maintenance.
The final course in this module is Periodontics/Orthodontics.In this course, students are introduced to the dental specialties. They become familiarized with what defines orthodontics, how its need is diagnosed, and how that need is treated. The stages, diagnosis, and treatment of Periodontal disease is discussed. After successful completion of this course, students can prepare and identify a procedure tray set up for orthodontics as well as two procedures trays related to Periodontics.
