The Ross Medical Education Center campus in Saginaw has enjoyed a partnership with Great Lakes Eye Institute as an externship site and graduate employer for their Medical Assistant and Medical Insurance Billing and Office Administration students. Great Lakes Eye Institute boasts six locations, and Ross has enjoyed the opportunity to work with each one. All the students and graduates have loved doing their externship there and those that have been hired have many great things to share about their experiences. In addition to providing a fast-paced, friendly environment for externs and graduates, they also provide great additional training to help externs and graduates take their career even further.
To find out more, read the interview below with Sandy Sprague, General Manager at Great Lakes Eye Institute:
What do you like about Ross graduates?
Ross graduates are prepared for entry level employment. They have a very good understanding of the mechanics of a medical office. The employer is able to “groom” them to the specifics of their own practice.
What is something you like about working with Ross?
They meet our needs! When I have an opening to fill, many times a simple email to my contacts at Ross will generate several excellent resumes to review and prospective candidates to interview.
How is the Career Services staff at Ross?
They are very receptive and responsive – very professional. They really are excellent to work with.
How would you describe your experience with having externs from Ross?
Really it’s a win-win. We, as the employer, get to work with the extern and train them. Upon completion of their externship, if we have an opening, many times they are hired for employment. The student gets the benefit of getting a job, and the employer has the benefit of knowing they have selected the right candidate for the job.
What’s the success rate of Ross graduates?
The success rate of a Ross graduate is made evident through their success rate in gaining employment. Ross does a great job in preparing the graduates for actual employment. It is the responsibility of the graduate to then use their new skills!
What’s the main advantage of hiring a Ross graduate?
They have less preconceived ideas of how to do tasks. You basically start with a very clean slate – a prepared employee. A Ross graduate does not come with the “baggage” some others may have due to working in other environments.
How would your facility be affected if it weren’t for Ross graduates?
We would have much more difficulty in recruiting entry level employees. Ross prepares their graduates with the fundamentals for employment; we as an employer go beyond the fundamentals and train them for our specialty. Ross definitely does fill a need in our community.
