Ross Medical Education Center campuses in Grand Rapids and Roosevelt Park have enjoyed a partnership with Mercy Health for several years. Students have completed their externships and many graduates have secured positions at both their Grand Rapids and Muskegon locations. As part of one of the largest hospital networks in the area, Ross students and graduates get incredible experience at their facilities and have the opportunity to work in a fast-paced location with access to many resources and under many highly qualified physicians and professionals.
To find out more, read the interview below with Shana Welch, Talent Acquisition Director:
What do you like about Ross graduates?
They are well-trained and local candidates which is ideal for our two locations – one in Muskegon and the other in Grand Rapids.
What is something you like about working with Ross?
They have been very responsive in our experience. Their program is a shorter program so we get more graduates more often.
How is the Career Services staff at Ross?
They are responsive and informative. When they have any changes in the program or new grads coming out, they let us know immediately. They also really try to get to understand who we are as an organization and by location. They know which students will fit best at which practice.
How would you describe your experience with having externs from Ross?
We really enjoy getting externship students. They do very well. In fact, towards the end of their externship, we work diligently to find positions so that we can hire them. We have found that the Ross externs are well-trained and knowledgeable, and we haven’t found that with every Medical Assistant program that we have worked with. There is no knowledge gap with Ross students, and we appreciate that.
Overall, how would you assess the success rate of Ross graduates?
Very high. In fact, in our Muskegon location, most of our new grads are Ross graduates.
What’s the main advantage of hiring a Ross graduate?
Again, they are well-trained and knowledgable. They seem to be really eager to come in and do a good job.
If it weren’t for Ross graduates, how would your office be affected?
We would be at a talent shortage. We would miss out on hiring local talent. We would definitely be missing something. We would love for Ross graduates to continue to fill our staffing needs.
