We are so thankful for our employer partnerships that help prepare our externs to enter the healthcare field and employ some of our graduates as they move from Ross to the “real world.” One of the partnerships our Ross College campus in Sylvania, Ohio has enjoyed for several years is with Nephrology Consultants of Northwest Ohio, Inc. Since 2010, approximately 40 Ross College Medical Assistant program students have been challenged and well prepared as externs at the office and many of those have found a home at the practice.
Recently, Barb Healy, the Office Manager, reached out needing some immediate extra help in the office. Just hours later, a Ross extern was at the door and ready to work. Barb and the rest of the staff were blown away and very thankful. However, that is just one example of the impact of the mutually beneficial partnership.
On the other side, Barb is very hands on with all of the externs. “She gives them additional training and educational materials to further their education while on externship and prepare them for the “real world” of medical assisting,” shared Lana Herron, Career Services Representative. “The clinical and administrative experience her site offers our externs is invaluable. Everything they implement with our externs is a streamlined process she’s perfected over the years to ensure they are adequately prepared for medical field and what offices expect out of their staff.” Lana also expressed the appreciation of the Ross College staff as Barb works so hard for each extern and graduate and the way that she cares for them and their medical assistant career.

What do you like about Ross externs and graduates?
They are extremely prepared. When they come here, we are able to teach them everything for our office, but they already know the basics.
What is something you like about working with Ross?
I think it’s a great experience, not only for the externs, but for the practice. I have not a person come from Ross not be prepared and motivated. Whatever they are doing there, they are doing it correctly.
How is the Career Services staff at Ross?
They have sent us such good candidates, but they have also bailed me out. It’s been the opportunity of a lifetime for both of us. A lot of responsibility lies with us. The industry only continues to get better if we work together.
How would you describe your experience with having externs from Ross?
When students come in from Ross, the first thing they tell you is, “I want to work hard.” They come in ready to learn. How wonderful it is to be able to teach them and then see how hard they will work even as a student!
Would you recommend Ross to other practices or potential students?
I would recommend them for anybody. I used to work with another organization taking externs too, but when I had to choose one, I chose Ross. Now, if people ask me because they want to work in the healthcare field, I tell them, “call Ross.”
