The third week in March is Health Information Professionals (HIP) week, as sponsored by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). The Medical Insurance Billing and Office Administration (MIBOA) students at the Flint campus celebrated March 16-22, by creating a poster board with HIP facts and printing flyers for students from other programs to pick up and read, to become more educated about being a health information professional. Information presented was obtained from www.ahima.org, which explains that health information professionals are responsible for monitoring medical records and health data for accuracy to ensure that clinical and administrative staff have access to this information to keep society healthy.
MIBOA students received pens and pins with the HIP 2014 week theme “Transforming Healthcare with Information”, and passed out Transformer tattoos (the robot cartoon from the 80’s) to all students in the school. MIBOA students also were able to dress casual the entire week and had a potluck to celebrate the last day of HIP Week 2014. Rebecca Jackson, MIBOA instructor at the Flint campus, said, “The Medical Insurance Billing students went above and beyond to educate the campus and visitors about being a professional in the medical field. It was exciting to see the students get excited about this subject. It is important to find little ways every day to keep students motivated to learn, and celebrating HIP week was perfect!”
