Dr. Peter Stamatis’ journey from dentistry to teaching is a testament to his dedication and passion for making a difference in people’s lives. Born to Greek immigrants, Dr. Stamatis found his true calling in dentistry, where he was able to blend his interests in medicine and engineering. With over three decades of experience in the dental field, he has now transitioned into teaching, bringing his wealth of knowledge to the next generation of dental professionals.
We sat down with Dr. Stamatis to hear more about his story. Here is what he had to say:
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I am a son of Greek immigrants. I grew up in a restaurant environment and was always torn between medicine and engineering. I eventually found a perfect combination in dentistry, which involves both medical and engineering aspects. Professionally, I practiced dentistry for 34 years and retired two years ago. I did my undergrad at the University of Toledo, attended Ohio State for dental school, and completed my residency at the Medical College of Ohio.
What made you go into dentistry?
It was a matter of finding the right niche. I almost went to medical school but wanted something different that also involved engineering. Dentistry requires a lot of visualization and meticulous work, which suited my skills perfectly, even though no one in my family had any dental experience.
What led you to teaching?
While practicing, I volunteered at Lorain County Community College’s dental hygiene program, which I enjoyed. After retiring, I wanted to stay active, so I looked for teaching positions. Ross came up, and I decided to give it a try. I started teaching in January 2023, and it’s been a very rewarding experience so far.
Tell us about your teaching experience so far?
It’s been a different pace, but very rewarding. I enjoy seeing students learn and grow. The support from the staff has been tremendous, and I appreciate the leeway they give me to teach in my own way. It’s all about preparing students for the real world, and I’m glad I can contribute to that.
What do you enjoy most about teaching?
The students give me a reason to get excited. Seeing the difference I can make in their lives is fulfilling. I also work with great staff who have helped me transition into teaching. Sharing my knowledge and seeing students succeed in their careers is the most rewarding part.
What are some pros and cons of going into dentistry, particularly from a dental assisting viewpoint?
Dental assistants are in great demand, especially post-COVID. The profession allows for long-term careers in one office if you’re good at what you do. It also offers opportunities to expand into other areas like dental hygiene. The main con, I would say, is the high stress levels associated with the job, as every patient and situation is unique.
What advice would you give to aspiring healthcare professionals?
Dentistry is a beautiful profession that allows you to make a significant impact on people’s lives. The field is always evolving with new technologies, which presents both challenges and opportunities. My advice would be to stay dedicated, continue learning, and be adaptable to new advancements in the field.
Do you have any memorable experiences from your years as a dentist?
One of my fondest memories is participating in National Dental Health Month activities at local schools. Teaching kids about dental health and seeing their curiosity was always exciting. Many of those kids grew up and brought their own families to my practice, which was very fulfilling.
Dr. Stamatis’ transition from a long and successful career in dentistry to a fulfilling role in education showcases his passion for dentistry and helping others.
