Instructor Spotlight: Getting to Know Jason at Tri-Area Trucking School

The journey to becoming a successful truck driver usually begins with a mentor who sees their potential from day one. At Tri-Area Trucking School (TATS), instructors like Jason are more than just teachers. They are the guides and motivators who serve as the driving force for students. With over two decades of experience in the trucking industry, Jason brings a depth of knowledge, passion, and a genuine desire to help students succeed. We sat down for an in-depth conversation to learn more about his journey, his approach to teaching, and what makes the TATS experience so unique.

Here is what he had to say:

Can you tell us a bit about your background in the trucking industry?

I’ve been in the trucking industry for about 23 years now. I started driving in the late ‘90s and, like a lot of drivers, I learned from the ground up. I’ve done everything from long-haul cross-country trips to regional and local routes. I have extensive experience with various types of freight, including reefer, dry van, and flatbed. I’ve seen a lot of change in the industry, from technology to regulations, but the one thing that’s stayed the same is the need for good, safe drivers.

What inspired you to transition from trucking into teaching?

I think it’s something that kind of naturally happened over time. Even when I was on the road, I found myself mentoring newer drivers, giving tips, showing them the ropes, helping them back into docks. It gave me a sense of satisfaction. After a while, I realized that I got just as much joy from teaching as I did from driving. When the opportunity came up at TATS, it felt like the right move. I wanted to give back to an industry that has given me so much.

Could you describe your teaching approach?

I try to keep it real and relaxed. I remember what it felt like to be brand new, not knowing anything, and being nervous. So I approach it with a lot of patience. I tell my students that there are no stupid questions. I’d rather they ask ten times and get it right than stay quiet and make a mistake on the road. I also believe in hands-on learning. You can talk about double clutching all day long, but until you feel it in the truck, it won’t click. So we spend a lot of time in the yard and on the road.

What do you find most rewarding about being an instructor at TATS?

Watching the transformation. Students come in, some with no experience at all, and over the course of a few weeks, you see them grow, not just in skill, but in confidence. There’s this moment with every student when it all starts to come together. They shift smoother, their backing improves, and they start thinking like a driver. That moment is priceless. I’ve had students who didn’t believe in themselves at first, and now they’re out there making a great living. That’s the best part of the job.

Are there common challenges students face during training, and how do you help them overcome those?

Absolutely. Confidence is a big one. Some students come in thinking they can’t do it, and they psych themselves out. Others struggle with shifting or backing. The key is repetition and encouragement. I break things down into manageable steps, and we practice until they get it. I also remind them that everyone learns at a different pace. It’s not about being perfect on day one, it’s about progress. And I’m there with them every step of the way.

How do you motivate students who may be feeling overwhelmed or discouraged?

I talk to them one-on-one. Sometimes all a person needs is someone to say, “I believe in you.” I share my own stories of when I was learning, how I struggled with certain things too. I let them know they’re not alone. I also make it a point to celebrate small wins. Whether it’s a good shift, a clean parallel park, or just showing up and trying hard, those wins matter. And when they start to see progress, it fuels their drive to keep going.

In your opinion, what makes TATS stand out from other trucking schools?

It’s the people. We’re a team here. Everyone, students, instructors, staff, we’re all working toward the same goal. We care about each student as a person, not just a number. We don’t just train drivers, we build futures. The support continues even after they graduate. We help with job placement, answer questions, and cheer them on as they start their careers. It’s that level of care and community that makes TATS special.

What advice would you give to someone considering a career in trucking?

First, do your research. Trucking isn’t for everyone, but if you’re someone who values independence, doesn’t mind some solitude, and wants a stable, well-paying career, it could be a great fit. Be ready to work hard, it’s not always easy, especially in the beginning. But if you stick with it, there’s a lot of opportunity. I always encourage people to ask questions and keep learning. The more you know, the better and safer driver you’ll be.

What’s one thing you wish more people understood about truck driving?

That it’s a skilled profession. It’s not just “driving a truck.” It takes focus, responsibility, and problem-solving. You’re operating a massive piece of equipment, managing time, navigating regulations, and dealing with all kinds of conditions on the road. It’s a job that requires respect. And without drivers, this country wouldn’t function. Everything we rely on moves by truck. Drivers are essential.

Jason’s dedication and experience for teaching make him an extremely valuable part of the Tri-Area Trucking School team. His ability to connect with students, break down complex concepts, and inspire confidence is what makes the difference for so many new drivers. It’s his deep passion for the road and commitment to safety that truly prepare his students for long-term success.
