Did you know that hand washing in the number one method for preventing disease? For any Medical Assistant student at Ross Medical Education Center, it is extremely important to understand disease transmission and how to prevent exposure. In Module One of the Medical Assisting program, a student will be taught how to take the necessary precautions as well as proper hand washing techniques. It will be more entertaining than you can imagine!
In addition, students will have the opportunity to learn and practice clinical skills in a hands-on environment to include suturing and suture removal, proper sterile techniques, instrument sterilization, changing a sterile dressing, and many role playing activities to include assisting in minor surgeries. Students will also be taught how to obtain throat cultures and perform strep tests. Learning all about a microscope and viewing different slides is an interesting component of the clinical laboratory, and students will have many opportunities to participate in these skills.
Along with these clinical skills, the module also includes medical terminology and overview of the body’s structure and function. Part of this module introduces skills related to medical office administrative duties and communication with many different types of patients including telephone techniques and appointment scheduling. Managing medical records is a critical part of any medical facility, and students will be exposed to both paper records and electronic health records.
With this comes the importance of medical law and ethics to include confidentiality. Instructors who teach in this program have stated that “the textbook we use throughout this program is comprehensive and is a useful tool in preparing students for an exciting career as a healthcare professional.” The classroom experience is interactive with many varied presentations, discussions, activities and numerous opportunities to use technology and clinical skills. Administrative skills also include use of Excel, a virtual library, StudyWare, and many online resources. Professionalism and soft skills are covered and can prepare students for their interaction with patients. The module is a place to gain knowledge while having hands-on fun with those clean hands!
