In Module Three of the Medical Assistant Program at Ross Medical Education Center, a student will be taught many of the important aspects of medications. Medications and their administration hold many interesting concepts from how they are measured to how they are provided and how a prescription is created, filled, and processed. A drug guide as well as an internet resource will be used to cover a variety of medications and their use.
Medical Assistant students will also be instructed on many clinical skills in a hands-on environment. These will include calculating medication dosages, oral medication administration, and various types of injections. Many injections are given intramuscularly, and students will also be taught all about the muscles used for injections. During clinical skills, students will be documenting using both the paper chart and the electronic health record.
The module also covers the medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology of the muscles and digestive system as well as the medications that are used for muscular and digestive conditions and diseases. An interesting and informative nutrition assignment and presentation are also a part of the activities.
A portion of this module includes skills related to medical office administrative duties, and basic word processing skills will be covered. The electronic health record is taught covering the aspect of patient education found through internet resources. Administrative skills also include use of a program called Typing Quick and Easy, Word, Excel, a virtual library, StudyWare, and many online resources. Professionalism and soft skills are covered and can prepare students for their interaction with patients, focusing on writing and communicating professionally.
The classroom experience throughout the module is interactive with many varied presentations, discussions, activities and numerous opportunities to use technology and clinical skills. The module is a place to gain knowledge while having hands-on fun with many varied activities. In the words of a student, “I’m very happy I made the decision to come to Ross.”
