Have you ever had an EKG (electrocardiogram), pulmonary function test, or nebulizer treatment? In Module Four of the Medical Assistant program at Ross Medical Education Center, a student will be taught how to perform these tests and treatment as well as interact with a patient having these procedures. A student will be introduced to many clinical skills in a hands-on environment with the ability to practice and perfect the skills of performing electrocardiograms, testing pulmonary function and oxygen saturation, and using nebulizer treatments.
During clinical skills, students will be documenting using both the paper chart and the electronic health record. The module also covers the medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology of the heart and lungs as well as the medications that are used for heart and lung conditions and diseases.
Part of this module also includes skills related to medical office administrative duties, and math applications and finance are covered following a basic math review. Even if math was never a favorite topic, you will see how fun it can be and how it is used as an application in the healthcare field. Students will be taught banking and payroll skills as well as patient and insurance billing and follow up. Math is also covered in various ways to see how financial literacy and financial recordkeeping are used in the business of the medical facility.
The classroom experience is interactive with many varied presentations, discussions, activities and numerous opportunities to use technology and clinical skills. Administrative skills also include use of Excel, a virtual library, StudyWare, and many online resources. Professionalism and soft skills are covered and can prepare students for their interaction with patients. The module is a place to gain knowledge while having hands-on fun with many varied activities. One instructor that always has a lot of fun with students in Module Four says they make sure to include “math activities that are so much fun!”
