This past December, the Ross Medical Education Center campus in New Baltimore collected items for a local organization based out of Mt. Clemens, MI called Turning Point. This organization follows a structured mission statement and philosophy that has been created to specifically help victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. Some of their services include: shelter assistance, counseling & advocacy, children’s program, forensic nurse examiner program, prevention education, personal protection orders, legal advocacy and 24-hour crisis hotline. One of the services that Turning Point provides is a secondhand clothing store called Second Hand Rose. They offer clothing to abuse survivors and sell it at affordable prices to others in the community as a part of the financial support needed to continue to provide services.
According to their website, “Turning Point’s mission is to provide programs and resources that enable victims/survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault to regain control of their lives.” Their sole objective is to see the end of violence “as a means of oppressing and controlling others” and they strive to equip survivors with all the skills and tools they need to regain their independence, health, and freedom. Turning Point works hard to provide community education regarding domestic abuse, and they act as an advocate for those that come to them for help. However, their vision is to eradicate their area of the root issues that cause violence and sexual assault to continue to exist.
As a campus, New Baltimore was able to collect and donate many basic daily items to Second Hand Rose. Some of these items included socks, under garments, clothing, household belongings, and various other items. In addition to the items that the campus donated as a whole, two recent Ross New Baltimore graduates also wanted to help out. They decided to join the campus’ efforts and donated several boxes full of items. Some of the items they gave included children’s clothing, two brand new children’s bicycles, and approximately 25 wrapped Christmas gifts for children who are under the care of Turning Point and their dedicated services.
