Tell me a little bit about yourself.
I first started at Ross because I wanted to go into medicine. But I didn’t really like it, so I switched to dental. I’ve been focused on dental ever since. The decision to change paths wasn’t easy, but it’s one that has brought me closer to my true passion. It’s been a journey of self-discovery and finding what resonates with me most.
What are your hobbies and interests outside of school?
I love traveling and spending time with my two-year-old godson. He brings so much joy into my life. Having these moments of happiness helps me balance the challenges of school and life. They remind me of what I’m working toward and keep me grounded.
Can you share your experience navigating life in the foster care system?
I first entered foster care before I was five. Then I went back to live with my dad until I was 12, but when he passed away, I had to move in with my mom. That didn’t work out, and I re-entered the system at 16. It was a tough journey, but I’ve been fortunate to have a supportive foster mom more recently. She really worked with me and kept me going. It makes all the difference to have someone who genuinely cares about your well-being and future.
What challenges did you face in education?
I dropped out of high school. It was recommended because I didn’t have enough credits to graduate. But my foster mom encouraged me to get my GED. Her belief in me was a turning point. I realized that even when the odds seem stacked against you, having someone in your corner can inspire you to keep moving forward. Earning my GED was a big step in proving to myself that I could overcome challenges.
What inspired you to pursue a career in the medical field?
I’ve always liked the medical field. Going to the dentist growing up was something I found fascinating, and my family has some medical background too. Those early experiences shaped my interest and gave me a sense of purpose. Dentistry combines my passion for helping others with a career that feels meaningful and exciting.
What changes do you think need to happen in the foster care system?
There should be more thorough checks. My first foster mom was abusive. People taking on this responsibility should have some experience with children or better training. Kids in the system need stable and supportive environments to thrive, and it’s important that foster parents are equipped to provide that.
What keeps you motivated?
You just have to push through it. It all gets better. Even when things seem impossible, I remind myself that challenges are temporary, and brighter days are ahead. If you’re at rock bottom, the only way out is up. That mindset has carried me through some of the hardest times in my life.
Have you ever considered mentoring others?
I would definitely be interested in mentoring someone. Having someone who’s been through similar experiences can make all the difference. I know how impactful it can be to have someone to look up to, and I’d love to be that person for someone else. At the same time, I think having a mentor for myself would be incredibly valuable too.
What are your career aspirations?
I want to build a stable career and help others. My goal is to become a dental assistant and continue growing in the field. I want to create a future where I can make a difference in people’s lives and provide the stability I’ve always strived for. It’s about building something lasting and meaningful.
What advice would you give to others facing adversity?
Push through it. It gets better. Even if you’re at rock bottom, there’s always a way up. Life’s challenges can feel overwhelming, but there’s always hope, and you’re stronger than you realize.
Cassie’s journey is a powerful example of how resilience, determination, and a supportive community can help overcome even the hardest obstacles. Her openness and willingness to share her experiences shine a light on the realities of the foster care system and the strength it takes to pursue a brighter future.
