Pharmacy Technicians are a vital part of the pharmacy profession and can be found assisting Pharmacists in a variety of healthcare facilities and retail pharmacies. In Module One of Ross Medical Education Center’s Pharmacy Technician training program, students gain an understanding of their future role as a Pharmacy Technician. They will be instructed on the ways that the needs and demands that they may face in their career have progressed through the history of medicine and pharmacy practice up to the current time.
Today, Pharmacy Technicians assist the pharmacist in a variety of practice settings that can be grouped into two different classification types. These two types can be broken down into the institutional pharmacy, or a hospital setting, and the community pharmacy, or a retail setting. In this module, students are introduced to the professional role that they may play in the workforce in both the institutional pharmacy and the community pharmacy. Throughout the module, time will be spent to review a variety of job descriptions and engage in classroom discussions.
The students will be exposed to the daily activities that occur in the pharmacy through role play in the mock pharmacy area of the classroom. In addition to learning about the job types and practicing hands on skills, students will also begin to practice inventory control and management along with data entry and insurance practices of the pharmacy in all practice settings. Using a practical management system that is commonly used in a variety of pharmacy settings, the students will be taught to process a patient’s prescription.
Included in the Ross curriculum is exposure to what to do and what not to do as far as professionalism and good character in the workplace. This practice is facilitated through mock Interviews, resume development, and professionalism discussion that specifically relates to the career that they are pursuing.
