For the recent events at Ross Medical Education Center in Port Huron, the Steve Maraboli quote: “a kind gesture can reach a wound that only compassion can heal” seems quite appropriate. Ross Medical Assistant students and Medical Insurance Billing and Office Administration students have taken time out of their breaks from class to create thoughtful cards containing words of encouragement for local cancer patients.
This is an annual event for the Port Huron campus that provides emotional support to local residents seeking care at Lake Huron Medical Center, as well as the People’s Clinic of Port Huron. In the past, this event has been called “Threads of Mercy.” It was named as such because of the beautiful blankets that were created and donated by members of the community for patients at the hospital. Changes within the hospital over the past year have resulted in changes with this event and although the name of the event has changed, the need for such items has not.
This was the first year that Nicole Semrow, Financial Aid Student Support Representative at the Port Huron campus, was made aware of this unique event. When Nicole heard the details surrounding this cause, she decided to donate a beautiful, hand-crocheted blanket which was made by her grandmother. “I know that my grandmother would want nothing more than one of her blankets to be used to help others and to make others feel better,” Nicole shared. Mary Jo Jobbitt, Medical Assistant Instructor, also expressed her passion for the cause, “this is so rewarding for our students to be able to give back and feel like they are helping someone have a brighter day because of a few kind words. Making a difference in someone’s life can be as easy as giving them a card and letting them know they are not alone.”
