The Ross Medical Education Center campus in Port Huron recently had the honor of participating in the “Threads of Mercy” event hosted by Saint Joseph Mercy Hospital Port Huron. This very special annual event showcases the talents of local quilters who donate their time and one of their beautiful hand crafted quilts in support of this cause. The blankets are given to patients at the Mercy Cancer Center as a token of comfort and care knowing these blankets were made especially for them.
In a continued effort to give back to the community, the Port Huron campus has partnered with Saint Joseph Mercy Hospital for the last three years for this unique event. Ross students took time to create cards which contained thoughtful messages. These handmade cards will accompany the blankets along with a single long-stemmed rose. The students feel honored to be able to share words of encouragement and compassion with individuals in need of care. Medical Assistant Instructor, Hannah Shaw, stated how important and heartfelt this gesture is and how it can touch lives in so many ways. “It’s important for patients to know people care about them and that they are not alone while they seek treatment” she said.
The Port Huron campus is especially grateful for the opportunity to give back to Saint Joseph Mercy Hospital because they have been a strong supporter of Ross Medical students and graduates for many years. Saint Joseph Mercy Hospital is one of the area’s largest health care providers offering 164-bed acute care in a not-for-profit hospital. They also provide adult medical/surgical services, emergency care, cancer care, cardiac care, bariatric care, inpatient rehabilitation services, including stroke care, orthopedics and joint replacement, and a vast number of other testing, health, and medical services. Saint Joseph Mercy is a member of Trinity Health.
