“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: ‘What are you doing for others?'” -Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
In honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the Ross Medical Education Center campus in Port Huron invited Aubree Mayhew, Resource Director of Blue Water Habitat for Humanity, to speak on the importance of volunteering and to share about the programs they offer the community to help eliminate substandard housing locally. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service projects are a part of United We Serve (www.serve.gov), the President’s national call to service initiative. It calls for Americans with various backgrounds to work together to provide solutions to our most pressing national problems.
Blue Water Habitat for Humanity is a volunteer-driven organization with volunteer opportunities available in all aspects of their work including construction, deconstruction, the ReStore and to serve on various committees. “Working alongside the family, getting to know them, and seeing how my volunteer efforts are making a positive difference in the community is rewarding experience,” shares Lisa Montross, Career Services Representative.
Formed in 1990, Blue Water Habitat for Humanity serves the residents of St. Clair and Sanilac Counties and is dedicated to eliminating substandard housing both locally and worldwide through constructing, rehabilitating, and preserving homes. They also advocate for fair and just housing policies and provide training and access to resources to help families improve their shelter conditions. Habitat for Humanity was founded on the conviction that every man, woman and child should have a simple, durable place to live in dignity and safety, and that decent shelter in decent communities should be a matter of conscience and action for all.
The presentation captured the attention of students, many of whom had questions about the programs and how they could learn more. Trista Johns, AmeriCorps Community Outreach Specialist, shared that the next Homeowner Information Meetings are scheduled for Thursday, January 29 at 6 p.m. and Saturday, January 31 at 10 a.m. at the Eleger G. Harvey Reinvestment Center at 3013 24th Street, Port Huron.
