The Port Huron campus of Ross Medical Education Center partnered with the American Red Cross to send holiday cards expressing gratitude to the men and women of the Armed Forces. With many service members and veterans separated from their families this holiday season due to deployments and hospital stays, the American Red Cross Holiday Mail for Heroes (HMFH) program empowers people to “Give Something That Means Something” by sending a card of thanks and support to the members of the Armed Forces, veterans and their families.
The students and staff at the Port Huron campus created over 70 cards this holiday season. The American Red Cross will distribute the cards to hundreds of locations domestically and around the world, including military installations, military and VA medical facilities and veterans organizations.
“I loved that we were able to be a part of sending veterans holiday cards,” said April Freeman, Medical Assistant student. “Seeing them smile on the video provided by the Red Cross is an amazing feeling. I appreciate the opportunity to participate in the Holiday Mail for Heroes program.” Shelby Stanek, another Medical Assistant student, added, “Seeing the reactions of the soldiers as they opened the cards and seeing how much it meant to them really puts things into perspective. It makes you appreciate the people who put their lives on the line for our freedom.”
Services provided by the American Red Cross reach both active duty soldiers all around the world and their families here at home. Red Cross workers use advanced communications technologies to keep families connected even in times of personal emergency. Family members can rely on support systems provided by the American Red Cross for a variety of needs including counseling services, food, clothing and shelter. Every step of the way during a military family’s journey, they can rely on the wide resources that the American Red Cross provides.
The mission of the American Red Cross is to prevent and alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors. Connect with fellow card senders through social media channels and help get the word out through Facebook and Twitter. Be sure to use the hashtag #holidaymail.
