Ross Medical Education Center in Canton has been collecting food for a great local Canton charity called Open Door Ministry. They began the food drive on November 1, 2013 and delivered on November 21, 2013. Open Door Ministry is a local food bank that provides food to families in need by stocking their food pantry with items that can easily be picked up by the families. They also have a job bank, ODM Graduate School, and offer counseling.
In 2012, 72,981 people were served. This equated to 1,610,612 pounds of food distributed! The cost per pound is only $ 0.02, cost per person, $0.38, and the total Meal Equivalent is equal to 1,094,715. That is a lot of food! It was rewarding for Ross students, faculty, and staff to become involved in this great cause and make a difference in the life of someone else. Jami Mullins, Assistant Director of Admissions, shared about her experience,
“I think it is great to see so many of our students contributing to such a good cause. Every day we have more and more students donating, and it’s really cool to see them wanting to help out the community.”
It is so easy to get caught up in your needs and forget about the needs of others. Every person needs to eat and not every person has the ability to provide for themselves. Ross in Canton believes in making a difference in the lives of others. Every event that gives us the opportunity we have to serve others ends up impacting much of our campus on a personal level. Mary Voiles, Career Services Student Support Representative, was so inspired, she wants to volunteer more.
“Thank you for sending me to deliver the food; it was a very humbling experience for me. I may need to volunteer there and bring my daughter with me.”
