One in four women is a victim of severe physical violence by an intimate partner, and one in seven men has experienced the same. Safe Haven Ministries is an organization in Grand Rapids, MI that is dedicated to provide a “place of refuge and hope” for victims of domestic abuse. They offer broad domestic abuse services to women and their children, as well as educate the community and participate in prevention programs.
Ross Medical Education Center in Kentwood, MI has invited Safe Haven to speak to the students and educate them about domestic violence. Students and staff learn what abusive behaviors are in a relationship, including a partner that imposes intimidation, verbal abuse, economic control, psychological and emotional manipulation, and physical attacks. They first learn that domestic violence is not limited to one culture, race, ethnic, gender identity, sexual orientation, or socio-economic background. After they know what domestic violence looks like, they learn how to react to someone if they report being in an abusive situation:
- Listen and encourage
- Emphasize Safety
- Connect to Resources
- Offer Safety Options
- Observe Safety
- Check-in
The tremendous impact of these presentations has been felt. Each time a presenter visits, at least one person sees they are in an abusive relationship or finds the courage to leave their abusive spouse. These individuals often lean on the services Safe Haven has to offer. It is a reassuring to know they have a support network to rely upon, as on average, every day in the U.S., three women are killed by their intimate partner, 75% are murdered when attempting to leave their relationship.
To support their shelter service, Ross- Kentwood has held “Personal Care” drives for Safe Haven. In the last drive, staff and students donated over 200 items of personal hygiene care to aid in supporting those that are in transitional housing. If you or someone you know is in an abusive relationship, Safe Haven can be contacted 24 hours, confidentially, at 616-452-6664 or read more at http://www.safehavenministries.org.
