Students & Staff at Ross in Saginaw worked together to fill the back of an SUV full of Pet Supplies for SOS Animal Rescue. SOS is a non-profit, no-kill fostering program that cares for sick and homeless animals. They cover the Midland and Saginaw area. SOS averages about 30 adoptions a month. They offer Spay/Neutering assistance to Midland County for low-income qualifying households. Joann Taylor, President of SOS came and spoke to Ross students about how their donations will help the cause.
SOS recently saved 25 cats from Saginaw Animal Control Center. The Department of Agriculture shut them down due to rapid spread of illness that they couldn’t control. They were going to have to euthanize 60 cats. They worked together with other groups and saved them all. Not one was put down. SOS holds open adoptions at PetSmart every Friday at 4:00pm and then Saturday through Sunday during store hours. Saginaw Campus staff posted some photos of SOS’s harder to adopt pets on the front desk in the lobby to generate interest.
Students donated blankets, beds, food, cat litter, toys, dog coats and booties, treats, pens, paper and cleaning supplies. One of the things that stands out about SOS is how much they take care to make sure the animals are comfortable. SOS makes sure that every homeless pet gets their own blanket that they will have with them throughout quarantine, vet visits, foster home and, the end goal, their new home. This is their security blanket. SOS takes donations such as old blankets or towels. There is a group of volunteers that will cut and sew them into individual blankets for the cats and dogs.
Ross Students also participated in a Best Pet Photo contest. Students and Staff decorated their desks and classroom doors with photos of their own beloved furry friends. If you would like to read about how you can help, please find SOS on facebook or at www.sosar.org.
