Tell me about yourself.

My name is Leteshia Palmer, and my life has been a journey filled with unexpected twists and turns. I grew up in Chicago, where the streets were tough, and survival often felt like a daily battle. Despite the challenges of growing up in a neighborhood marked by violence, poverty, and instability, I learned early on how to navigate adversity with resilience. The community around me, though often struggling, was close-knit, and those relationships became a source of strength. When I first decided to pursue further education, I envisioned returning to my roots, seeking the familiar comfort of home. But life had other plans. Instead, I found myself embarking on the beautiful but demanding journey of marriage and motherhood. As a mother of four, plus my husband’s daughter making five, family became my core focus.

My educational path at Ross began while I was pregnant, a challenging but defining period that solidified my determination to create a better future for myself and my children. I started with the medical assisting program and completed it, despite the pressures. After briefly entering the workforce, I returned to school to earn my associate degree, and eventually a nursing degree.

Driven by my entrepreneurial spirit, I opened a salon after completing my cosmetology education in 2016. I poured my heart into the business for two years, but the unforeseen challenges of the pandemic forced me to close it. Afterward, I relocated to Merrillville, where I continued my education in medical assisting. I wanted to expand my knowledge and create a stable foundation for my family, and that’s exactly what I’m continuing to build on today.

Tell me about your time at Ross.

My experience at Ross was really positive. I was offered a lot of support during a challenging time. I was living in the area and initially started with a CNA certification before transitioning into the medical field. The teachers were exceptional, demonstrating a genuine commitment to our success. I vividly recall the support of Janelle, a teacher who went above and beyond to assist us. She provided not just academic guidance but also personal encouragement. The environment was conducive to learning, fostering a sense of community and collaboration that made the demanding coursework more manageable. I really appreciated their efficient handling of administrative matters, such as addressing inquiries and resolving issues, which alleviated a lot of unnecessary stress. The graduation ceremony was a pretty memorable occasion as well, where we got to celebrate our hard work and dedication. I wholeheartedly recommend Ross to others, and I’m really happy to know that some of my acquaintances are currently thriving in their medical assisting or associate degree programs there.

Can you talk specifically about your experience earning an associate degree at Ross?

The associate’s in Medical Assisting program was a transformative experience. It profoundly impacted my professional growth. I really enjoyed the curriculum and the practical skills I acquired, which I feel like prepared me for the challenges of the medical field. One instructor in particular, Tony Bond, was an inspiration for me. Her dedication to our success was truly unparalleled. As an online student, I felt her presence and support, even from a distance. She consistently checked in on our progress, provided timely feedback, and offered assistance whenever we encountered challenges. Her proactive approach and genuine concern for our well-being were a contrast to some other instructors I’ve had in the past who were less engaged. Tony’s commitment to our success was a constant source of motivation, which helped us towards our academic goals and reinforcing my belief in the power of dedicated educators.

What specific strategies or mindsets would you recommend to students facing challenges in their journey?

Well, beyond the conventional advice of staying focused, I would emphasize the importance of cultivating resilience and self-belief. It’s crucial to recognize that setbacks are inevitable, but they do not define your potential. Embrace challenges as opportunities for growth, and never underestimate your ability to overcome obstacles. I had moments throughout this journey that were hard. But, these experiences taught me the importance of advocating for myself and seeking environments that align with my values and professional goals. I learned to prioritize my well-being and find opportunities where I could thrive and make a meaningful impact. Even in the absence of external support, Ross became like a nurturing environment, a place where I was able to find encouragement and guidance. Remember that your dreams are valid, and your aspirations are attainable, regardless of your circumstances. Time is a precious commodity, and it will inevitably pass. Choose to invest it wisely, pursuing your passions and shaping your future. The journey may seem daunting, but the rewards of perseverance are immeasurable. If you stick to it and see the vision at the end, it can lead you to a life of fulfillment and purpose.

What are your goals?

My long-term goal is to specialize in OB radiology, a field that deeply resonates with my passion for women’s health and the opportunity to make a meaningful impact. I plan to dedicate the next year to thoroughly researching radiology programs and identifying institutions that offer comprehensive program and clinical experiences, ensuring I receive the best possible education. I have already initiated conversations with another school, confirming that some of my previously earned credits will transfer, which will significantly reduce the time and financial burden of my studies, allowing me to focus on my studies. I am committed to maintaining a strong academic record and actively seeking out mentors and networking opportunities within the radiology community, building connections that will support my professional growth. I envision myself becoming a skilled and compassionate radiologic technologist, providing exceptional care to patients and contributing to advancements in medical imaging, ultimately making a positive difference in the lives of others.

What achievements are you most proud of?

While I am immensely proud of my academic and professional achievements, I also cherish the smaller, personal milestones that have shaped my journey and defined my character. I am proud of my ability to balance my academic pursuits with the demands of motherhood, demonstrating that it is possible to achieve both personal and professional fulfillment, even in the face of significant challenges. I am proud of my resilience in the face of adversity, my ability to maintain a positive outlook, and my unwavering commitment to my family, who have been my greatest source of strength. The purchase of my first home and my marriage are also significant milestones for me, representing my hard work and dedication, a testament to my ability to create a stable and loving environment for my family. And of course, I am endlessly proud of my five children, who inspire me every day to be a better person and strive for a better future.

Can you expand on how you balance your personal interests with your responsibilities?

Balancing my personal interests with my responsibilities requires careful planning and prioritization, and it’s a skill I have honed over the years. I dedicate specific time slots to every area of my life, ensuring that it does not interfere with my family or academic commitments, allowing me to pursue my passion while fulfilling my obligations. I also make an effort to cherish the moments I spend with my family, engaging in activities that foster connection and create lasting memories, recognizing the importance of nurturing those relationships. I believe that maintaining a healthy balance between work, family, and personal pursuits is essential for my overall well-being, allowing me to thrive in all areas of my life.

What specific strategies can someone use to build self-reliance?

Building self-reliance is a process that requires introspection and self-awareness. It’s a long journey of discovering your inner strength, but very worth it. It involves recognizing your strengths and weaknesses, setting realistic goals, and developing a growth mindset, embracing challenges as opportunities for learning. It is essential to cultivate a strong sense of self-worth and to trust your intuition, listening to your inner voice and believing in your abilities. Surround yourself with positive influences, and learn from the experiences of others, seeking out mentors and role models who inspire you. Also, embrace challenges as opportunities for growth, and never be afraid to ask for help when needed, recognizing that seeking support is a sign of strength, not weakness. Remember that you are capable of achieving anything you set your mind to.

Can you share a difficult experience in your life that has shaped who you are today, and how you’ve worked through it?

There’s a part of my life that’s hard to talk about, but it’s one that shaped me into who I am today. I was raped, and that experience turned my world upside down. It felt like everything I had worked for, everything I believed about myself, was shattered in an instant. But despite the pain, I knew I couldn’t let it define me forever.

At first, I struggled with shame and guilt, which are feelings that many survivors carry. It was hard to speak out because I didn’t want to be seen differently. I didn’t want to be reduced to just this one painful moment. But over time, I realized that sharing my story was part of my healing. It was part of taking my power back.

I’ve learned so much about myself since that day. I’ve learned to be kinder to myself, to embrace the healing process, and to surround myself with people who support me. Yes, it was a horrific experience, but it also taught me resilience, and how to rise after being knocked down. It’s a journey that hasn’t been easy, but it’s one I’m still walking. And I know that I’m not alone. I’m speaking out today, not just for myself, but for anyone who feels like their voice has been silenced. Healing is possible, and we are stronger than we realize.

How did overcoming this experience change the way you approach challenges in your life today?

Facing my abuser taught me more about my own strength than I could have ever imagined. Before that moment, I didn’t think I had it in me to confront the person who had caused me so much pain. But when I did, I realized how powerful I truly am. It wasn’t just about standing up to him, it was about standing up for myself, for my healing, and for my future. I discovered that resilience doesn’t mean you never feel fear or doubt. It means that despite those feelings, you keep moving forward. I learned that I can face my past without letting it control me, and that taking ownership of my story gives me the power to define who I am. Confronting him was a moment of clarity, where I understood that I am not defined by what happened to me. I’m defined by how I rise above it. That strength and resilience have stayed with me in every aspect of my life since then.

Can you explain the emotions you felt during that moment, beyond just the sense of relief?

It was more than just a sense of relief. It was a deep emotional and spiritual liberation. Imagine carrying a heavy burden for years, a weight that distorts everything you see and feel. That was my life before. The pain was constant, always lurking in the background like a shadow that never left. I tried to escape it with distractions like going out, drinking, anything to avoid facing it, but it only made the pain more intense, like adding fuel to a fire. When I finally confronted him, it felt like I was facing a monster I’d been running from for most of my life. The fear was overwhelming, but so was the determination to finally take control. As he acknowledged what he had done, something inside me shifted. It wasn’t just about him admitting his wrongdoing – it was about me reclaiming my power. It was about saying, “You no longer control me.” The weight wasn’t just physical; it was the anger, fear, and shame I had been carrying for so long. When he apologized, it was like a dam breaking, releasing years of suppressed emotions. I felt lighter, more present, and more alive than I had in years. It was as if I had been reborn.

How did the confrontation unfold, and how did you handle the emotions involved?

The conversation was heavy, but I knew I needed to have it. I walked into the bar with my heart racing, and there he was, sitting at a table. I went straight up to him, skipping any small talk. I looked him in the eye and said, ‘You know why I’m here.’ The tension was undeniable. He tried to downplay things at first, but I wasn’t having it. I told him exactly how his actions had affected me – the fear, the anxiety, the way it shaped my life. For the first time, he really listened. When I finished, there was this long silence, and then he apologized and was genuine. No excuses, no shifting blame. It wasn’t about forgiveness, but about him owning up to what he had done. That moment gave me the closure I needed to start moving forward and healing.  

You mentioned how this trauma affected your sleep. Can you explain in greater depth how it impacted your daily life, your relationships, and your sense of self?

The impact was pervasive, affecting every part of my life. It wasn’t just nightmares but a constant state of hypervigilance, always on edge and expecting the worst. Every sound, every touch could trigger a flashback, sending me into panic. Relationships suffered most, as trust became foreign. Keeping people at arm’s length, fear of vulnerability led to walls built around me, isolating me from the world. Intimacy was a minefield; even the slightest touch could trigger a violent reaction, pushing others away. My sense of self was shattered, leaving me feeling broken and damaged, like a puzzle with missing pieces. A deep sense of shame lingered, with self-blame and the belief that I was somehow tainted. Life became a constant emotional battlefield, each day a struggle against my own demons. Anxiety and fear made concentration impossible, turning even simple tasks into monumental challenges as my mind replayed the trauma, preventing any focus on the present.

What advice would you give to other girls or women who have gone through similar experiences? What practical steps can they take to begin their healing journey?

First, believe in yourself. You are not alone, and none of this is your fault. It can be terrifying to speak out, but finding someone – whether a friend, a therapist, or a support group – who truly listens and understands is so important. Speaking your truth is a huge first step in healing. Don’t hesitate to get professional help. Therapy isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s a place where you can find the support and tools to start processing your trauma and rebuilding. Setting boundaries is crucial. Protect yourself from people who might make you feel small or invalidate your experiences. Take time for self-care, no matter how small it seems. Find what makes you feel peaceful or joyful, whether it’s journaling, creating, or just being in nature. Be kind to yourself. Healing isn’t linear, and there will be days that feel harder than others, but that’s okay. With time, patience, and a lot of courage, you’ll find your way back to yourself. Never forget: you are strong, resilient, and deserving of love and happiness.

You’ve talked about breaking generational cycles. How did you specifically manage to do that, and what advice do you have for others who want to break similar patterns?

Breaking generational cycles is about recognizing patterns and making a conscious choice to do things differently. It’s about acknowledging the pain and trauma that has been passed down and refusing to perpetuate it. For me, it started with self-awareness. I had to confront my own demons, my own insecurities, and my own fears. I had to understand how my past experiences were shaping my present behavior. I had to learn to forgive, not just others, but myself. I had to learn to let go of the anger and resentment that had been poisoning my life. It was about creating a new narrative, one that was based on strength, resilience, and hope. I chose to be a good role model for my children. I wanted them to see that it was possible to overcome adversity, to break free from the chains of the past. I wanted them to know that they were not defined by their circumstances. I wanted to give them the tools to build a better future. For others who want to break similar patterns, I would say don’t be afraid to challenge the status quo. Don’t be afraid to question the beliefs and behaviors that have been passed down. Seek out positive influences and role models. Surround yourself with people who support your growth and healing. And remember, you have the power to create a new legacy, one that is filled with love, compassion, and strength.

You mentioned wanting to write a book. What specific message do you hope to convey to your readers, and what impact do you hope your story will have?

The goal of my book is to be a beacon of hope for survivors of trauma. Through my story, I aim to show them they are not alone, that their experiences are valid, and that healing is possible. It’s about giving them the courage to speak their truth, break their silence, and reclaim their power. My hope is to inspire them to build lives filled with joy, purpose, and meaning – lives that are not defined by the past, but shaped by the strength and compassion they possess to create a new future.

In sharing my journey, I hope to challenge the stigma surrounding trauma and abuse, raise awareness about the prevalence of these issues, and underscore the importance of offering support and resources to survivors. It’s also about encouraging others to share their own stories and connect in a space where we can all heal together. I want it to be raw, unfiltered, and real – allowing people to see the truth, the pain, and the resilience that comes with the healing process. The message is simple: healing is possible, even from the deepest wounds.
