A veterinary technician is an important part of the veterinary team. They work under the supervision of a veterinarian and often assist them with a variety of clinical and laboratory tasks.
During their education and during their externship, they are trained to perform laboratory tests, provide specialized care, take and process radiographs (x-rays), prepare animals and equipment for procedures and surgeries, assist in variety of medical procedures, and more.
* Please note: Progression through the Ross College Veterinary Technology core program courses is contingent upon students receiving the mandatory pre-exposure rabies vaccine. Of all the communicable diseases to which a veterinary medical professional may be exposed, the contraction of rabies, while unlikely, is almost 100% fatal. Therefore, the Ross College Veterinary Technology program requires that all students be vaccinated against this disease before they may work with live animals.
After the conclusion of the classroom portion of the Veterinary Technology program at Ross, there is a required externship experience. Students have the meaningful opportunity to practice their knowledge and skills in the field alongside other veterinary healthcare professionals. In addition, it allows employers at the veterinary facilities the chance to see the students in action prior to making hiring decisions for their office.
Students who finish the Veterinary Technology program that have not yet taken the Veterinary Technology National Exam (VTNE) are considered veterinary assistants. Once they have taken and passed the VTNE, they register with the state of Ohio and then are called Registered Veterinary Technicians.

Leslee Lloyd Graduate Medical Assistant student at Davison, MI campus Graduation: April 24, 2019Hello! My name is Raeven Barnes. I am twenty five years old, and I am from Kalamazoo, MI. I made the decision to come to Ross Medical because I was sick. I was basically living in the hospital on and off for about ten years. I saw the opposite side of the medical world while being a patient and fighting for my life. Unfortunately, while being under the care of certain medical professionals, there was little to no empathy. I started to have this desire to help others like me. I have been through the storm in my life and now that I'm healthy I am so happy to be attending Ross. I can't wait to become a Pharmacy Technician and make a difference in someone's life.
Raeven Barnes Graduate Pharmacy Technician student at Kalamazoo, MI campus Graduation: August 26, 2019Ross has helped me to realize even higher goals than I could have imagined for myself. I like the multi-cultural environment. Ross values diversity and gives back to the community through volunteer opportunities. I have been inspired to even pursue my master's degree and eventually my PhD. With English being my second language, it is a huge challenge for me to grasp the clinical part of the program, but because of the different resources and help that Ross has provided for me, I am more efficient and confident of my abilities as a future medical assistant.
Isabelita Tatman Graduate Medical Assistant student at Fort Wayne, IN campus Graduation: March 27, 2019I'm a single mother of 3 and work full time. I came to the point of my life where I was ready to change my profession and do something that will better our lives. So I was looking around at different schools, calling around seeing what they offer. Then my mom told me about Ross. I was nervous of course, but I called and the gentleman I talked to was so upbeat and supportive. Made me feel like they were really willing to help me out. I set up an interview with the school and I met with Brandi. Brandi is amazing!! She was so friendly and listened to all of my needs and wants. I started school in May 2018, of course I was nervous, but everyone helped me out with all of my questions. Every time I walk in for class, they are always so friendly and knew my name from day one. I was in the evening MA program. My teacher was very helpful and if I needed help they would sit down with me and work one-on-one. I'm now on my externship with the school. I'm at an ENT and I love it! I'm so glad I took the step and called Ross because now I see everything I learned in school coming out everyday and realize every day that my life will be for the better with this career.
