Mariam Qahtan: Ross Medical Education Center Graduate on Her Journey to a Career in Dental Hygiene

Pursuing a career in the dental field is a challenging yet rewarding path that requires dedication, hard work, and a passion for helping others. Mariam Qahtan, a recent graduate of Ross Education’s Dental Assisting program, embodies all these qualities. Her journey has been filled with challenges, changes, and personal growth, but through it all, she has remained committed to achieving her ultimate goal of becoming a dental hygienist. In this interview, she shares her experiences, struggles, and triumphs, offering valuable insights for aspiring students looking to follow a similar path. Mariam’s story is one of dedication, proving that no obstacle is too great when you have the will to push forward.

Can you tell me a little bit about yourself and your background?

I grew up in Iraq and moved to the United States in 2009. Adjusting to a new country was definitely a challenge, especially as a child. I had to learn a new language, adapt to a different culture, and find my place in an unfamiliar environment. When I arrived, I started in elementary school and then moved on to middle and high school. Initially, I was interested in architecture, but in high school, I decided I wanted to be a pharmacist. I took a KCTC (Kent Career Technical Center) class in pharmacy tech, but I quickly realized it wasn’t the right fit for me. I just didn’t feel a connection to it. So, I decided to pursue dental hygiene instead.

I started my prerequisites at Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC) with the goal of transferring to Ferris State University for their Dental Hygiene program. I was accepted on my first try, which was a great accomplishment, but life took an unexpected turn when I became pregnant with my third child. That moment forced me to reevaluate my plans, and I decided to stay at GRCC and get on their waiting list for the Dental Hygiene program. It wasn’t easy balancing motherhood, work, and school, but I knew I needed to keep moving forward. I couldn’t let any setbacks define me, so I started looking for ways to stay engaged in my field, which led me to Ross.

What made you choose Ross for your dental assisting education?

My sister was already doing the Medical Assisting program at Ross in Kentwood and told me about their Dental Assisting program. I had no idea they even had one! Since I needed something to keep me engaged while waiting for my hygiene program to start, I decided to enroll. I knew it would be a great way to gain hands-on experience in the field and give me an edge when I eventually applied for the Dental Hygiene program. It was one of the best decisions I made because it helped me solidify my interest in dentistry.

What was your experience like at Ross?

At first, it was a bit overwhelming because it was something completely new for me. But after a few weeks, I got used to it and started to really enjoy it. Then, our instructor left, and for a while, I was the only one consistently attending class. That forced me to learn independently, and I even started helping other students. It wasn’t easy. There were moments when I questioned if I was doing the right thing, but I pushed through. Eventually, a new instructor, Miss Sarah, was hired, and she was amazing. She answered all my questions and shared her experiences, which made me even more interested in dentistry. I ended up becoming the class tutor, which was a great experience. I learned that sometimes, when faced with uncertainty, you just have to take control of your own learning and trust yourself.

What are your plans now that you’ve completed the Dental Assisting program?

Right now, I’m studying for my radiology exam, and I just started working as a classroom aide at Ross, which I’m excited about. My goal is still to become a dental hygienist. I’ve decided not to attend Ferris and will instead complete my Dental Hygiene degree at GRCC. I only have one more prerequisite class left – organic chemistry – which I’ll be taking this fall. Once that’s done, I’ll be on the waitlist for the program, which usually takes about two years. It’s a long journey, but I’m willing to put in the work because I know the reward will be worth it.

What motivates you to pursue a career in dental hygiene?

During my externship, I had the opportunity to observe one of the hygienists, and it really reinforced my decision. She took the time to explain everything to me, and I loved seeing how much of an impact she had on patients. That experience made me even more determined to become a dental hygienist. I want to be in a field where I can help others while also continuously learning and growing.

What challenges have you faced throughout your journey?

Balancing school, work, and being a mom has been the biggest challenge. There were nights when I barely slept because I had to study after putting my kids to bed. I also had to deal with self-doubt at times, wondering if I was making the right choices. But every time I felt overwhelmed, I reminded myself why I started. My children are my biggest motivation, and I want to show them that hard work and perseverance pay off.

What advice would you give to students who are just starting out?

Stay focused and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Find mentors, whether they are instructors, classmates, or professionals in the field. Also, don’t let setbacks discourage you. The path to success is never a straight line, but as long as you keep moving forward, you will reach your goal.

What is an achievement you’re most proud of?

I graduated from Ross with a 4.0 GPA. Balancing school, work, and raising two kids wasn’t easy, but I put in the effort, and it paid off. I’m really proud of that accomplishment because it showed me that I can handle challenges and come out stronger on the other side.

Mariam’s journey reflects strength and self-discovery. From navigating different career interests to overcoming challenges in her externship, she has remained focused on her ultimate goal of becoming a dental hygienist. Her story serves as an inspiration to other students, reminding them that taking the longer path is okay as long as it leads to the right destination. She has faced setbacks, but she has never let them define her. Instead, she has used them as motivation to work harder and stay determined. With her determination and dedication, Mariam is sure to continue thriving in her career and making a meaningful impact in the dental field.
