Lapeer Obstetrics and Gynecology, the office of Dr. Lisa Allen, began taking on Ross Medical Education Center externs in both the Medical Assistant and Medical Insurance Billing and Office Administration programs in Davison in December of 2012. From that very first extern till now, every Ross student that has gone through the office has been given phenomenal experience that will carry over into any medical environment in which they may later find themselves. Students have loved everything about the office from their electronic medical records that externs are given hands-on experience working with to their incredibly clean and open facility. In fact, many students loved the office so much that they wanted to stay and volunteer after they finished their externship. Ross Career Services department, externs, and graduates in Davison very much appreciate all this office has to offer and hope to working with such a well-run and dynamic employer in the future.
To find out more, read the interview below with David Allen, Office Manager at Lapeer Obstetrics & Gynecology:
What do you like about Ross graduates?
They come with the basic skillset that they need, are ready to be trained in whatever office environment we have, and are pretty adaptable.
What is something you like about working with Ross?
The staff in the local office is very reachable, and the externs are always local which is good.
What’s the best part of having externs from Ross?
It gives us the benefit of a fresh perspective on our own operations. It provides an opportunity to evaluate how we train people here as well.
Overall, how would you assess the success rate of Ross graduates?
Completely dependent upon what they put into it – the one we have now is fantastic. Ross gives students all the tools they need to be successful.
What’s the main advantage of hiring a Ross graduate?
Getting to know them beforehand through the externship. I would be very hesitant to hire anyone without going through the externship first. It’s really invaluable to have that opportunity.
If it weren’t for Ross graduates, how would your office be affected?
We wouldn’t be able to have such a dynamic and interesting atmosphere in our own office. We also wouldn’t have as complete of a perspective on up and coming employees.
What’s been your overall experience with Ross’ externship program?
We’ve had 14 or 15 externs, and it’s definitely something I want to keep doing. The majority have been really good and have done really well. I get reference calls a few days after they leave, and they definitely deserve a job. Taking on externs is something I would recommend to other offices.
