This July, the morning and evening Medical Insurance Billing and Office Administration program students from the Flint campus of Ross Medical Education Center once again had the opportunity to do some off-campus learning from those in their field. This time, they were able to accompany their instructor, Rebecca Jackson, to Frankenmuth, Michigan. Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan was hosting a professional training for office staff at the Bavarian Inn Lodge. This is an event that previous classes have attended and in which they have found great worth.
The students were thrilled to attend and be in the company of some experts in their future field of work. Classes during the training included: Coding and Documentation, Risk Adjustment, Diagnostic Closure Incentive Program, Performance Recognition Program, Health e-Blue, and ICD-10. The Medical Insurance Billing and Office Administration students were able to participate in the classes and network with billing and coding specialists in the medical field. They were also excited because many of the topics were things that they had been learning about in class, so they felt competent and confident in sharing with their peers and others from the local healthcare community.
During the seminar, both breakfast and lunch were served, and each student left with a complimentary bag bursting with Blue Cross Blue Shield goodies and information! Ms. Jackson’s favorite moment was when each table had to select an area of patient dissatisfaction, and brainstorm ways to correct it. Then each table shared their conclusions and ideas with the entire group of about 150 people. It was a very educational and entertaining day for all in attendance! Additionally, students obtained a certificate of attendance to show future employers that they are serious about this field. The students were very thankful for the faculty and staff that consistently encourages them to stay up-to-date in the billing and coding world.
