Opened in 2014, the Ross Medical Education Center campus in Owensboro has had a shorter history thus far. However, they have already enjoyed having many graduates that are hard working, persevering, and successful. Many of them have stories that inspire and encourage the staff and faculty at the campus. One of those inspirational graduates is Ada McHenry, a graduate of the Medical Insurance Billing and Office Administration program. Not only did she overcome a lot to get where she is now, she also worked hard in the classroom and always had a great attitude!
Ada is a single mother of two boys, and she decided to begin her journey with Ross in June of 2014. Before attending Ross, she had always worked in factories and was tired of being constantly laid off. When she came in for her Admissions appointment, she shared with the representative that she needed stability in her life. She wanted that consistency in order to not only to take care of her two boys, but to better care for herself as well. She also wanted to show her sons that you can accomplish anything if you put your mind to it!
While attending Ross, Ada faced many challenges. At one point she even contemplated quitting school because of her lack of finances. However, with the support of her instructor, Shafawna Fox-Baker, and Campus Director, Latasha Shemwell, she stayed in school and found a part-time job to get her through. The part-time job allowed her to keep her apartment, provide for her boys, and stay in school.
Ada began her externship with River Valley Behavioral Health in December of 2014. She showed up early every day and always made she to ask questions in order to learn their processes better. Upon successful completion of her externship, she was offered a full-time position with benefits as River Valley’s Patient Finance Representative. Ada was overjoyed and shared with the Career Services staff that attending Ross Medical Education Center was the best decision she has ever made. She continued, “with my education from Ross I am able to work my dream job and spend more time with my family.” The staff and faculty at the Owensboro campus could not be more proud of her and her accomplishments!
