His experience shows the value of perseverance and a positive attitude when transitioning into a new career.

Tell me about yourself.

I reside in the small, close-knit town of Ashley, Michigan, which is located near St. John’s. Ashley is a quiet and rural place, known for its friendly community. Living in a small town has its perks; you get to know your neighbors, and there’s a strong sense of community support. It’s a great place to unwind after a long day on the road, and I appreciate the tranquility it offers.

I’ve spent the last 30 years working on a family farm, which has been an incredibly fulfilling and grounding experience. Farming is not just a job; it’s a way of life that requires dedication, hard work, and a love for the land. Over the years, I’ve learned a great deal about resilience and problem-solving, as each season brings its own set of challenges and rewards. However, after three decades, I felt the urge to explore a new career path and decided to pursue truck driving, an interest that has always been in the back of my mind. This interest was partly influenced by my family; my father-in-law is a seasoned truck driver, and his stories about life on the road fascinated me.

Initially, the transition wasn’t smooth. I didn’t pass the physical examination required to obtain a commercial driver’s license. This setback could have been discouraging, but it actually motivated me to improve my health. I embarked on a weight loss journey, and I successfully shed the necessary pounds to meet the physical requirements. Once I got my license, I started driving trucks on our farm under a farmer’s permit, which gave me the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a familiar setting. This experience was invaluable, as it prepared me for more extensive truck driving responsibilities.

What was it like transitioning into truck driving?

The journey into truck driving was both challenging and rewarding. I enrolled in a truck driving program where Kim, my instructor, played a pivotal role in shaping my skills. Kim was an excellent mentor—knowledgeable, patient, and always willing to go the extra mile to ensure we understood the material. It was a unique time because we were his last class before he moved on to a different position, which added a special touch to the experience. The camaraderie among the students and the support from the instructors created a positive and encouraging learning environment.

The structure of the program was comprehensive and well-organized. We started with a week of online coursework that covered the theoretical aspects of truck driving, including safety protocols, vehicle maintenance, and the logistics of the trucking industry. This was followed by a week of practical training in the yard, where we practiced maneuvers, such as backing up and making tight turns, and we became familiar with the different parts of the trucks. The final week focused on driving on actual roads, which was both exhilarating and nerve-wracking. This hands-on experience was crucial in building our confidence and skills.

Upon completing the program, we received a certificate of completion. The next step was to pass the state test to officially obtain our commercial driver’s license. This test was comprehensive, assessing our knowledge of regulations and our practical driving skills. Passing the test was a significant milestone and a proud moment for all of us.

Were there any standout moments or memorable experiences during the program?

One of the most memorable experiences was a practice trip to Tawas Beach. This trip was part of our practical driving training and provided a real-world application of the skills we had learned. It was a beautiful drive, and navigating through different terrains and traffic conditions was both challenging and exhilarating. This experience not only tested our driving skills but also gave us a taste of the diverse environments truck drivers encounter. It was a highlight of the program and a great bonding experience for the class.

Is the program exclusively for trucks, or does it also include other types of large vehicles?

The program offered training for various classes of vehicles. For instance, Class B training covered smaller trucks, which are commonly used for local deliveries and construction work. I decided to pursue Class A training, which focuses on operating larger semi-trucks, as this would open up more opportunities in the industry. Additionally, I took the hazmat class to learn how to handle hazardous materials safely and obtained my tanker endorsement, which qualifies me to transport liquids. These endorsements have significantly broadened my career options, allowing me to take on a wider range of jobs.

How was the program structured?

While the majority of the training was on-site, there was a fair amount of studying to do at home. The instructors provided a detailed booklet covering all the essential information we needed to know, from safety regulations to vehicle mechanics. This booklet was an excellent resource for studying and preparing for the written portion of the state test. The combination of hands-on training and self-study ensured that we were well-prepared for all aspects of the truck driving profession.

The driving portion of the program was well-structured and collaborative. We usually worked in small groups, with two or three students assigned to each truck along with an instructor. This setup allowed us to learn from each other’s experiences and provided good opportunities for hands-on practice. We took turns driving, which gave each of us plenty of time behind the wheel to hone our skills. The instructors were always present to guide us, provide feedback, and ensure our safety. This group dynamic also helped build a sense of camaraderie among the students, as we supported and encouraged one another throughout the training.

What are your future aspirations?

I’ve officially retired from farming and have made the transition to hauling gravel, which has been a rewarding change. Not only do I enjoy the work, but the financial benefits have also been significant—my income has doubled since making the switch. The trucking industry offers a variety of opportunities, and I’m excited to explore them further. While hauling gravel is my primary focus now, I’m open to other possibilities, such as specialized transport or long-haul trucking, depending on what opportunities arise.

But yeah, overall, the instructors in the program were incredibly supportive and knowledgeable. They made the learning process enjoyable and accessible, which is crucial when transitioning into a new career. The program itself was comprehensive and well-rounded, equipping us with the skills and confidence needed to succeed in the trucking industry. For anyone considering a career in truck driving, I highly recommend taking advantage of such training programs. It’s a field that offers stability, good pay, and the opportunity to travel and see new places. Overall, I had a very positive experience and look forward to the continued journey in this new chapter of my life.

From overcoming health challenges to mastering the skills required for truck driving, Rick has successfully transitioned from a long career in farming to a rewarding role in transportation.
