Opening new campuses and creating new opportunities for a community and its people is one of the things that motivates those in the Ross community to keep doing what they do best: training healthcare professionals and sending them out into their communities equipped to make a difference in their field and beyond. As Ross continues to grow and expand, the vision to positively impact the community and the healthcare field never changes. One of the newest campuses that is already working hard to make their mark on the Ross story is located in Elyria, Ohio.
Currently the Ross Medical Education Center campus in Elyria offers training in the Medical Assistant program, the Medical Insurance Billing and Office Administration program, and the Dental Assistant program:
- The Medical Assistant program in Elyria is excellent for students that are interested in being a more hands on member of the healthcare team. Through courses at Ross, they are instructed on a variety of both clinical and administrative tasks. Some of those on the clinical side include phlebotomy, injections, EKGs, and assisting with patient exams. The varied experiences and training points gives students and graduates more flexibility in their future endeavors. Medical Assistant students are also given instruction on administrative tasks like charting, electronic records, correspondence, and even some medical billing and coding!
- The goal of the Medical Insurance Billing and Office Administration program in Elyria is to prepare students for a career in medical billing and coding or in any other position on the administrative side of a medical office or other healthcare facility. In the Ross program, they are taught about all that goes on “behind the scenes” and will receive instruction on both manual and electronic records, insurance companies, and medical coverage options. They will also be taught anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology so that they are prepared to identify medical necessity and spot medical billing and coding errors. Due to their thorough training, graduates of this program should also be prepared to measure and record patient vital signs and respond appropriately in case of an emergency!
- Finally, students in the Dental Assistant program in Elyria will be instructed on the basics of chair-side assisting, restorative properties, impressions, molds and fabrications. They will also get practice processing dental x-rays using manual and automatic methods, identifying errors, and demonstrating correcting measures. They will get the opportunity to practice infection control and OSHA standards and receive training in vital signs and dental emergencies, including CPR certification. The Ross Dental Assistant program Instructors work hard to ensure that students are fully prepared for the administrative side of the office as well, including charting and insurance claims.
Brenda Meyer, Campus Director in Elyria, shared about her excitement regarding working for Ross and the opportunity to help students achieve their goals: “working at Ross allows me the opportunity to work with students who are ready to make a change in their lives. These students come to the campus unsure, hopeful, scared and often intimidated. They are experiencing hardships in their lives that they don’t always know how to handle. In my position with the campus, I am able to help show these individuals that they are capable of getting past these obstacles and that they have the ability to succeed. I am able to watch students grow, not only into strong allied health professionals, but into confident and capable individuals. It is a wonderful feeling to watch these students accomplish goals that they had previously thought were out of reach.”
Since the campus opened, the staff has already been thrilled to welcome a wide variety of students to the campus. Some of the students are new to post-secondary education and just getting started in the workforce, while others have been working in dead-end jobs and are hoping to start over and leave them behind. However, all of the students in Elyria have one thing in common: they are excited about starting a new career in the healthcare field and the opportunity to improve their own lives and the lives of others. That common thread can be seen throughout the campus as students, faculty, and staff engage in community service projects together. So far they have worked to gather toys for children at Christmas, food to give to local shelters, and even water to donate during the Flint water crisis. They have also visited the elderly at local nursing homes just to show that they are appreciated. “These students haven’t even graduated yet, but they are already making a positive impact on their fields and in their communities,” shared Brenda, the proud Elyria Campus Director.
If you are interested in learning more, the Elyria staff and faculty invites you to come by the campus in person for information and a tour of the facility at 120 Market Drive, Elyria, Ohio 44035. They are always excited to see someone new and show them around the facility, even giving them a chance to see classes in action!
