Since 1939, the Detroit VA Healthcare System has been improving the health of the men and women who have so proudly served our nation. In 1996, the medical center moved from its original location in Allen Park, Michigan to its current location in Detroit. Services are available to more than 330,000 Veterans living in Wayne, Oakland, Macomb and St. Clair counties. This group represents approximately 44% of the Veteran population in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. In addition to the main facility in Detroit, the VA Healthcare System offers services in two community-based outpatient clinics, one in Pontiac, MI and one in Yale, MI.
In recognition of Veteran’s Day and to show their appreciation and gratitude to their local veterans, students from Ross Medical Education Center, Port Huron, Michigan campus took time to create thoughtful cards, each with a special handwritten note thanking the veterans for all that they have done. These cards were personally delivered to the Yale Community Based Outpatient Clinic. The Yale Clinic is a local site operating in the St. Clair County area that is staffed with caring professionals whose mission it is to provide timely, compassionate, and high quality care to those who have served by encouraging teamwork, education, research, innovation, and continuous improvement.
Assistant Campus Director of Education Stacey Clark commented, “it is such a pleasure to give back to veterans who have served our country and protected our freedom. It is the least we can do.” The Veterans Administration began all because of President Lincoln’s promise “To care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow, and his orphan by serving and honoring the men and women who are America’s veterans.”
The Veterans Health Administration continues to provide medical assistance programs through VA Medical Centers, Community Based Outpatient Clinics, Outpatient Clinics, and VA Community Living Centers. An interesting fact to note is the United States has the most comprehensive system of assistance for Veterans of any Nation in the world. To learn more, visit www.va.gov.
