It’s back to school time! Families are flocking to the stores, school supply lists in hand, ready to outfit their children with everything they need to help them have a successful school year. While this is fun and exciting time for children, it can often be worrisome and costly for parents. With new clothes and shoes to purchase and budgets being stretched to the limit, sometimes the necessary school supplies can be easily overlooked.
The Port Huron campus of Ross Medical Education Center hoped to alleviate some of that stress for families by once again holding their annual school supply drive. Stacey Clark, Assistant Campus Director of Education, shared, “the goal is to help ease the burden of parents, as well as teachers, who frequently purchase classroom supplies using their personal funds.”
One of the many students from the Port Huron campus who generously donated school supplies, Susan Harris, picked up some extra school necessities while she was back-to-school shopping for her four grandsons. “I usually try to pick up the little things,” Susan said. “My daughters are busy buying shoes and school clothes and this is a way I can help. Plus the lists seem to get longer every year.”
This year, the Port Huron campus selected the East Shore Leadership Academy as the recipient of the donated school supplies. East Shore Leadership Academy (ESLA) is a charter school that opened its doors to local students in 2014. ESLA is located in the city of Port Huron and serves students in Kindergarten through Eighth grade. East Shore Leadership Academy operates using ”The Leader in Me” practices which are described in Stephen Covey’s book Seven Habits of Highly Effective People.
The teachers and staff at East Shore Leadership Academy are dedicated to giving their students the tools they need to become confident, well-rounded leaders, while recognizing and addressing each child’s individual needs and abilities. The staff, faculty, and students at the Ross Medical Education Center in Port Huron are hopeful that their donation of more than 300 items will help to outfit the classrooms and give the ESLA students additional resources to enhance their learning process.
