This November, the Ross Medical Education Center campus in Saginaw partnered with several local businesses to collect items for Operation Care Package Michigan (OCPMI). Operation Care Package Michigan is a non-profit organization founded by JJ Fulgenzi, and located in Lapeer, MI. This amazing group has been providing care packages to US active duty personnel for over 10 years! Their goal is to make sure that service men and women know that their communities are always thinking of them during their tour of duty.
The campus’ excitement for this holiday project bubbled over into the community! North Saginaw Charter Academy, Great Lakes Eye Institute, and Covenant HealthCare Pharmacy all stepped up to work with the campus to support this great cause. Each business had collection boxes and Covenant even held a “Jean Day” fundraiser to raise money to buy supplies for the soldiers.
Within the campus, generosity abounded as well! Students created handmade cards and wrote letters of thanks. The evening Medical Insurance Billing and Office Administration students purchased the supplies and made handmade fleece blankets with their instructor Julie McIntosh. The campus even received phone calls asking what items had not yet been donated so as to make sure we had everything on the wish list. The campus staff, faculty, students and their families helped to fill the lobby with goodies.
The students were all very grateful for the opportunity to support this excellent cause. Many of them shared individual stories of the service members in their lives and the impact that they had made on them. Operation Care Package Michigan contacted the campus to let them know that their donations helped to stock 600 Christmas care packages! The packages are already on their way to the troops. Everyone involved is already committed to collecting even more next year to show the troops how much they are appreciated.
