Stay organized

As a nursing assistant, mastering clinical procedures is crucial for providing quality care to patients and supporting the healthcare team. Whether you're just starting out in your career or looking to enhance your skills, here are some invaluable tips to excel in clinical procedures.

Communicate effectively

Clear communication is essential for successful clinical procedures. Listen carefully to instructions from nurses and other healthcare professionals, and don't hesitate to ask questions if something is unclear. Additionally, communicate effectively with patients to ensure they understand the procedure and feel comfortable.

Follow Standard Precautions

Adhering to standard precautions, such as hand hygiene, wearing personal protective equipment (PPE), and proper disposal of medical waste, is essential for preventing the spread of infection and maintaining a safe environment for patients and staff.

Master basic skills

Focus on mastering basic nursing skills, such as taking vital signs, assisting with mobility, and performing basic hygiene tasks. These fundamental skills form the foundation of your role as a nursing assistant and are essential for providing comprehensive patient care.

Seek opportunities for learning

Take advantage of opportunities for continued learning and skill development. In addition, attend workshops, seminars, or online courses to enhance your knowledge of clinical procedures and stay updated on best practices in healthcare.

Practice

Practice clinical procedures regularly to build confidence and proficiency, and always take advantage of simulation labs or practice scenarios with colleagues to refine your skills in a safe environment before performing procedures on patients.

Pay attention to detail

Attention to detail is crucial in healthcare to ensure accuracy and patient safety. Double-check equipment, verify patient identifiers, and follow procedures meticulously to minimize errors and potential complications.

Stay calm under pressure

Clinical settings can be fast-paced and high-stress environments. Learn to stay calm and composed, even in challenging situations. Utilize relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing or visualization, to manage stress and maintain focus during procedures.

Collaborate with your team

Nursing assistants work closely with nurses, physicians, and other healthcare professionals as part of a multidisciplinary team. Foster positive relationships with colleagues and collaborate effectively to coordinate patient care and ensure seamless execution of procedures.

Seek feedback and reflect on practice

Request feedback from supervisors, mentors, or peers to identify areas for improvement and refine your skills. Reflect on your practice regularly to assess strengths and weaknesses, set goals for growth, and continuously strive for excellence in clinical procedures.

By following these tips and dedicating yourself to continuous learning and improvement, you can excel in clinical procedures as a nursing assistant, providing exceptional care to patients and contributing to positive outcomes in healthcare settings.

Erica Shelly

In May of 2017, I decided to start my journey, and though many obstacles popped up trying to prevent me from starting, I was able to begin school in June of 2017. When I started school, I was working a part time job and juggling being a full time mom of six beautiful children. It wasn't easy; it took hard work and dedication. I kept two planners: one for work and appointments, the other for school assignments and tests. In January of of 2018, I finished my externship and received my certificate. I even accepted a position when I finished my externship; my hard work had paid off. I absolutely love my job! My team members and patients are great. Best of all, they make work fun. I have truly found my calling.

My experience here at Ross has been nothing short of amazing! With the small class sizes, flexible hours, friendly staff, and hands-on activities, what more could you ask for? I chose the Dental course because a smile can brighten anyone's day! I've learned that dental is not all about teeth. You will also be taught the anatomy of the human body which is very interesting and my favorite Mod so far. My instructor ensures that we are comfortable with the material before moving on. Who knew that in just 9 short months you would be out working in the community doing what you love. Ross is a great school and I highly recommend it to anyone looking to fulfill their dream in the medical field. Ross offers many different courses like medical assistant, pharmacy tech, veterinarian, dental assistant, medical billing and coding, and much more. Come check us out!

Jason Barton

My name is Jason Barton and I graduated from Ross in 2012. I have been privileged since then to be able to help Ross with guest speaking engagements, mock interviews, delivering speeches at the graduation ceremonies, and being an advisory board member. For the last two and a half years, I have been even more privileged to be an instructor here at Ross. I am so thankful to be able to give back to Ross, which has given me so much.

Kristen Burley

The reason I chose Ross is because I liked how it is a "hands-on" program. The instructors were fantastic - they worked with me one-on-one and helped me if I didn't understand something. They were there for me if I had a question outside of class. I felt confident in what they were teaching me for my career path. Everyone is super friendly and supportive. I am very grateful that I am a part of such a great school/program, so I can succeed!
